Water demand needs in 2020
. Total demand is projected to increase by
about 54 percent from 1995 to 2020
. Demand will increase from 661 million
gallons per day (mgd) to 1,021 mgd
. The greatest increase in demand is in the
public supply sector, where demand is
projected to increase by 125 percent
. Population is projected to increase by
about 55 percent to 33 million

Existing source is 'imited
. The Floridan aquifer provides almost all of
the region's existing public supply and a
large part of the agricultural supply
. This source is of good quality, economical,
and highly reliable
. The Floridan aquifer cannot provide all
future water supplies in the region without:
- Damaging wetlands
- Reducing spring flows
- Increasing saltwater intrusion
Va'uab'e natura' resources
worth protecting
. The Wekiva River system - a natural oasis
in an urban environment
- An Outstanding Florida Water
_ Ecological communities along Wekiva's
spring runs are identified by the Nature
Conservancy as globally imperiled
- Spring flows from the Floridan aquifer
sustain these communities
. About one-half million acres of potentially
impacted wetlands
. Numerous sensitive lakes and springs

A'ternative water sources
. Without alternative source development, east-central
Florida is poised for costly competition among major
public water supply utilities
- 78 public supply utilities serve the region
- Additional inexpensive, fresh groundwater is the
preferred source for most utilities
- Inadequate fresh groundwater is available to satisfy
projected demands
Surface water - the most viab'e
alternative source
. St. Johns River - about 350 mgd available
. Upper Ocklawaha River - about 14 mgd available
. Other available sources include:
- Brackish groundwater
- Freshwater transported from remote locations
- Seawater
Water conservation and reuse-
vita' project e'ements
. Water conservation and reuse are being aggressively
pursued
. Other management
techniques include
- Artificial recharge
- Aquifer storage and recovery
- Water supply system

require greater
investment
. Traditional groundwater develop-
ment to meet projected demands
would require capital investment of
about $400 million, but would
result in unacceptable
environmental harm
. Alternative water supply, including
surface water from L~e S1. Johns
River, will require capital investment
of about $1.2 to $1.5 billion
. Large regional water supply facility
on the S1. Johns River would
require capital investment of about
$590 million
