C :. EJII t- AG- II J~O Dear lots. Ray: I have asked our engineering staff here in Tallahassee to review the concerns expressed in your February 12, 1982, letter regarding siRning for the City of Winter Springs on Interstate 4 at the State R03d 434 interchange. Our traffic engineers have reviewed this matter and have advised ae that ,the present signing in advance of the exits on 1-4 at State Road 434'presently includes the route number on the first line, a destination message for "Longwood" on the second line, and exiting instructions on the third line. The Department must follow nationally adopted standards for the design and placement of all traffic control . devices in Florida. That standard with respect to the State Road 434 interchange, would permit the addition of an additional destination message on the present guide signs, hO\"ever, these requirements limit the destination messages to the first identifiable destination (city) along the intersecting route in' each direction from the interchange. If a destination is added to the present signs in line with this policy, it would most properly be Apopka and not an additional city name east of the interchange. We appreciate your concerns relating to the need for signing to Winter Springs"but in this particular instance, I regret we cannot oblige since nationally adopted signing policy would make it an inappropriate action. If you feel there are signing deficiencies on the State Road System in the vicinity of the City of Winter Springs, please contact District Engineer C. A. Benedict at our District Office in DeLand, (904) 73/.-2171, in order that one of his engineers might review the need for additional signing at locations other than Interstate 4. PNP/msg ~C. A.
