CALL TO ORDER
Committee Member Michael Segura called to order the Thursday, April 11, 2024 Regular
Meeting of the Veteran and Veteran Family Advisory Committee at 5:30 p.m. in the
Commission Chambers of the Municipal Building (City Hall, 1126 East State Road 434, Winter
Springs, Florida 32708).

Committee Member Segura opened the nominations for Chairperson.

CHAIRPERSON. COMMITTEE MEMBER SIMS ACCEPTED THE NOMINATION.
NO OTHER NOMINATIONS WERE MADE.

300) Approval of the Thursday, October 12, 2023 Veteran and Veteran Family Advisory
Committee Regular Meeting Minutes.
Committee Member Bean noted a clerical error in the minutes. Assistant City Clerk Tarrant
noted the errors and will make the appropriate changes.

COMMITTEE MEMBER ROSS. SECONDED BY COMMITTEE MEMBER MILLER.

502) 2024 Hometown Hero Nominations
Chairperson Sims opened the item. Questions regarding past nominations were asked. Ms.
Krish the past procedures and relayed to former nominated Heros have been all been
granted the year of nomination. Discussion ensued on the timeline for receiving nominations
and staff requested to have all the nominations into the City two months prior to the event.
Questions regarding parameters and requirements for the nominations ensued and Staff
responded in kind.
Discussion ensued on whether the Committee would be the contact point for the suggested
nomination from residents and with that the information that would be needed when
submitting a nomination to the Committee. Chairperson Sims asked for a vote of:
“WHO WANTS THE DECISION TO STAY WITH THE COMMITTEE TO MAKE THE
RECOMMENDATIONS SAY AYE.” ALL AYE. NO ODJECTIONS. MOTION PASSED WITH
UNANIMOUS CONSENT
Staff agreed and suggested submittals be made via email and then the nomination would
be provided to the committee for consideration.

The discussion continued to upcoming events within the city happening between the times
the Committee meets. Staff relayed the process in which the next major events will go in
relation to veterans. Further questions were about the Beer vendor awarding and why a Bid
would be necessary due to pervious conversations. Staff relayed there were multiple vendors
interested and to be fair a bid was needed.
Additionally, the Committee requested someone from the Parks Department to come and
give an overview of the Veterans Memorial regarding people already on the wall and the
space available, so the Committee has a better understanding.
REPORTS
Committee Member Miller shared a Florida Veteran’s summary population report for
member and the audience of the reducing numbers of Veterans and the quality of
reminding from each war.
Chairperson Sims asked about Winter Springs City Hall being a “Toys of Tots” drop location.
Staff would relay to the Interim City Manager and see for approval.
PUBLIC INPUT
Chairperson Sims opened Public Input.
Mr. Rob Elliott, 925 Chokecherry Court, Winter Springs expressed what he as a commissioner
is looking for from the Committee. Wants the Committee to relay ideas to the city for what
they want for Veterans.
Chairperson Sims closed Public Input.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Sims adjourned the Regular Meeting at 6:11 p.m.
