advised that one (1) or more Members of any of the City's Advisory Boards and Committees may be in
attendance at this Meeting, and may participate in discussions.
Persons with disabilities needing assistance to participate in any of these proceedings should contact the
City of Winter Springs at (407) 327-1800 "at least 48 hours prior to meeting, a written request by a
physically handicapped person to attend the meeting, directed to the chairperson or director of such
board, commission, agency, or authority" - per Section 286.26 Florida Statutes.

any matter considered at such meeting or hearing, he or she will need a record of the proceedings, and

OCTOBER 12, 2023
CALL TO ORDER
Vice-Chairperson Michael Segura called to order the Thursday, October 12, 2023 Regular
Meeting of the Veteran and Veteran Family Advisory Committee at 5:30 p.m. in the
Commission Chambers of the Municipal Building (City Hall, 1126 East State Road 434, Winter
Springs, Florida 32708).

A moment of silence was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
No changes were made to the agenda.

AWARDS AND PRESENTATIONS
100) Seminole County Veteran Walk-in Services presentation
Mr. Jason Althouse, Seminole County Veteran Services Officer, came to give the Board an
update and overview of the Veterans walk-in service provided at the Senior Center as
requested by the Committee. Mr. Althouse asked the Committee for any change suggestion
to the current schedule or if the Committee wanted to stay the course. The Committee agreed
to stay the course after some discussion with Mr. Althouse.
Additionally, Mr. Althouse suggested teaming with Outpost 5405 to have another outreach for
Veterans there as well and provide a safe comfortable space but also get more foot track to
the Winter Springs Outreach. Suggestion on expanding the advertisement out to surrounding
Cities was given to help expand the reach and knowledge of the Winter Springs Veteran
Services location.

500) Discussion on Veteran's Day Tribute Ceremony
Ms. Hannah Krish opened the item relaying the time of the event and the secondary option in
case it rains. Discussion regarding adding name to the wall, the process of adding a name and
having the Veteran Wall area updated and cleaned ensued. Staff relayed there was some
updating for the event and volunteers are welcome.
501) Discussion on the 2024 Hometown Hero Selection Process
Ms. Krish opened the item and gave an overview for the purpose of the item as to set a formal
selection process for picking the Hometown Hero. Ms. Krish relayed the proposed process of
opening the application earlier in the year and then presenting the applicants to the Board for
selection at the July or October meeting.
REPORTS
Vice-Chairperson Segura recognized Ms. Lora Ross as the Hometown Hero nominee for the
calendar year 2023. Discussion regarding the Winter Wonderland parade ensued with
suggestions for advertising in the newsletter for citizens and veterans who want to do a float,
the parade route and having recognition for the Seminole County Veteran of Month.
