EREAS, The Sallie Harrison Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer
service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism - was organized November 15, 1918 in
Sanford, Florida; and the organizing Regent, Elizabeth Harrison Starling, whose Revolutionary ancestor was Edward
Harrison of Georgia, named the Chapter in honor of his oldest daughter Sallie Harrison; and the Chapter begin immediately
with war relief by collecting funds for a Liberty Loan and the Tilloloy Fund, and in 1918, funds were donated to purchase
aspirin tablets to be sent to seven hospitals in England and France; and
WHEREAS, In the 1920's, the Chapter placed United States Flag Codes and copies of the Constitution of the United
States ofAmerica in Seminole County schools, which is a practice continued to this day during Constitution Week; and in
the 1930's, the Chapter sponsored essay contests in Seminole County schools which also continue to this day; and
furthermore, this Chapter sponsored three Children of the American Revolution societies, one of which was the Fort Mellon
Society, founded in 1944 and which is still active and placed historic markers around the County; and
WHEREAS, During World War H,, members of this Chapter heldpositions with the American Red Cross, Ration Board,
and the USO, in addition rolling bandages and knitting for service men; and in 1952, the Chapter started raising funds to
build a replica of General Sanford's personal library and with the assistance of other groups, the Henry S. Sanford Memorial
Library and Museum was completed in 1956 - today, this is known as the Sanford Museum; and
WHEREAS, Over the past 25 years, this Chapter has partnered with numerous community -based organizations to
support military and Veterans, and each month, volunteers pack boxes that are sent to active duty military serving overseas.
Now, THEREFORE, .1 CHARLES L4 CEY, Mayor of the City of Winter Springs, do hereby Proclaim
that in honor of the
10 6m ANNIVERSARY
of thefounding of the Sallie Harrison Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, we congratulate
and thank Members both current and past, for the significant contributions and service they have given to Seminole County.
