HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018 04 05 Arbor Day 9'what PROCL MATION WHIM OW� YM %�X.W ets, f%OWA WHEREAS, Arbor Day has been recognized around thece gS94 wren the Mayor of a small Spanish village called Mondohedo (now known as Alameda de ios Remedios) orgas been documented as the first Arbor Day event, and since i that time,the celebration of Arbor Day has sprouted and grown;and ItIE E AS, Arbor Day is rooted in the history of many countries around the world and throughout the United States of America; with specific thanks to J. Sterling Morton, a newspaper editorwho had moved to Nebraska where trees were sparse and lacking and proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture in 1872, that a day be celebrated for the planting of trees and which might also help attract more people to the State of Nebraska. His proposal was accepted, and Nebraska declared what is known in modern time as the first official"Arbor Day"which was celebrated with one million trees planted by Nebraskans on that day;and �HEREAS, trees nourish nature, produce life-giving oxygen, clean the air, conserve energy, reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, moderate temperatures, cut heating and cooling costs; and are also a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes,as well as fuel for our fires;and IWH.EREA,S,trees marl:the change in seasons in such beautiful style, as well as providing habitats and canopy for wildlife including birds,butterflies,,bees,chipmunks,squirrels,in addition to numerous other species of wildlife;and WI-IE EAS, trees inspire outdoor recreational activities for children and adults and pets,connect us to the natural world, beautify our communities,enhance the economic vitality of business areas,and trees in our municipality improve property values; and wherever trees are grown,they provide a?astincg legacy for many years to come. 19 0W, Tti R-EFo'Rm , 1„ QiA nu_ (;'E x Mayor of the City of Winter Springs,do hereby recognize and Proclaim "ARBOR DAY" in the City of Winter Springs, Florida,and from the Mayor of Mondohedo in 1S94,to this Mayor in 2oi8, I sincerely hope that all citizens of our beautiful community will celebrate Arbor Day in some way-if you are able to plant a tree or several,please do; if you can care for any trees on your property or nearby, please do; if you can assist in any way to support any efforts to protect trees, please do—future generations will thank you and will be living in a better and more beautiful environment. And as J. Sterling Morton said, "Arbor Day is not like other holidays.
