I am truly humbled and honored by this recognition particularly when I look back with fondness of others that have received a Key To The City. We were all blessed and enriched by their service. I would like to thank the Mayor and Commissioners with whom I served here in City Hall. It was an honor to serve with each of you. Although we may or may not have agreed 100% of the time I can say with certainty that we did agree much more often than not. As a long time elected official Lee Constantine is fond of reminding us "Its okay to disagree as long as you are not disagreeable". I have sat many times where you sit and said to the Mayor or Commissioners that "Sometimes we have have to professionally agree to disagree". You know there is a reason why we have six elected officials in this City. As with any Collegial Body each person brings with them ideas and strengths. Working collaboratively as a body brings great results. E Pluribus Unum. Of course the Collegial Body we are referring to is the elected officials of The City of Winter Springs each of which was selected by the voters of this City to take care of this City and to do the peoples work of this City. In my opinion during the last two years there has been lots of criticism of myself and you Mayor and Commissioners serving this City. In my opinion it just seems apparent to me that for over two years there has been a well orchestrated plan to make false and misleading claims against our City and its leaders. As a City we are not perfect. But the extent of the falsehoods and the purpose for which they are being spread all align with the goal of a small number of realtors, developers, large property owners and if you can believe it even former Mayors and Commissioners of this City. Recent events have demonstrated that its reach is even into Seminole County and other jurisdictions within the County. In my opinion the purpose of their efforts can be summed up very simply: Retake Control of Land Use and Development In This City. If you can believe current and former elected officials of this City and the County have criticized me during the last six months that I have not been an elected official and thus no longer a public figure. That criticism has been for them to tell me shut up, sit down and no longer attend City or County Commission meetings. The same folks that took an Oath of Office to support and defend the Constitution of the State of Florida now object to me as a private citizen of coming to a Commission meeting and speaking as it is my right under Florida Constitution: Article I, Section 24(b) Commission Meetings shall be open to the public. Article 1, Section 5 The People shall have the right peaceably to assemble, to instruct their representatives, and to petition for redress of grievances. In light of this it kind of begs the question—Why are they so afraid of Cannon? Residents of Winter Springs it is now critical that each of you pay attention to giant wave of external Development influences coming into this City. Be vigilant citizens and make your representatives do your work NOT the work of outside jurisdictions and businesses.
