HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019 04 09 NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive DayPROCLAMATION OFFICE OF THE MAYOR WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1889 and is the sole representative of city delivery letter carriers employed by the U.S. Postal Service; WHEREAS, NALC branches across the country, including Central Florida's local Branch 1091, are currently preparing for the 27th anniversary of the "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive to be held Saturday, May 1 lth, 2019 which is the nation's largest one -day effort to combat hunger; WHEREAS, an estimated 50 million people face hunger every day in America which include children, senior citizens, and military veterans. WHEREAS, with the help of rural letter carriers, other postal employees, and numerous volunteers, the NALC has resulted in the delivery of more than 1.6 billion pounds of donations to community food banks and pantries over the past 26 years with Florida collecting 12 million pounds and the local Branch 1091 collecting over 1,000,000 pounds of food just last year. WHEREAS, interested participants should place a bag or can of non-perishable food next to their mailbox prior to their letter carrier's arrival on Saturday, May 11t', 2019, and the carrier will bring the food back to the postal station and, with volunteer assistance, will be delivered to local_ food banks or pantries.
