I am writing this joint letter to each of you prior to the start of tonight's City Commission Meeting. As you
know, our City was very fortunate to have seven of its resident's apply to be selected and appointed by the
City Commission to fill the vacant City of Winter Springs Mayoral seat. Only one of the seven of you will
be selected tonight to serve at Mayor and thus no doubt six of you will be disappointed. As I told each of
you during our iiterviews,with seven applicants and five voting Commissioners,I have absolutely no idea
who will be our next Mayor. The purpose of this letter is to personally thank each of you for taking the time
and effort to complete and file with our City Clerk your application. This was a laborious effort on your
part.In addition,each of you spent roughly thirty minutes with me in your interview to be Mayor. The City
Clerk has told me that each of the other Commissioners have likewise conducted separate interviews of you.
Your willingness to step forward in service to our City and the efforts that you have already undertaken in
this regard in completing your applications and going through the interview process is to be highly
commended. I wish each of you the best of luck tonight during the selection process.
For the six of you who are not selected as Mayor tonight, I would like to assuage your disappointment by
sharing with you the below quote from a very famous speech given by President Theodore Roosevelt on
April 23, 1910 at the Sorbonne, Paris, France.
"It is not the critic who counts; not that man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the
doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short
again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to
do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause;
who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at
least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who
neither know victory nor defeat,"
