(Like Carolina Sapphire, it must be propagated from cuttings and cannot be grown from seed) The key word here is "BLUE!" Probably the most startling blue color of any southern conifer. Blue Ice Cypress can be used as a privacy screen, Christmas Tree, or as a DRAMATIC focal point in the landscape. Blue Ice Cypress makes a beautiful blue backdrop for contrasting shrubs and flowers. Hardy in zones 7 — 9. Blue Ice Cypress is more columnar than other Cypress, prefers hot dry conditions, likes moisture but wants well drained soil, and prefers full sun. Once established, Blue Ice Cypress grows 2 1/2' — 3' per year and reaches 30'tall or better and 8'— 10'wide. Two varieties, called the "Blue Ice" cypress (C. arizonica "Blue Ice") and the "Carolina Sapphire" cypress (C. arizonica var. glabra "Carlolina Sapphire"), are versatile trees with some similar attributes but also some differences. 111111gjill I RMIRMIMM, interest, especially on mature specimens where the trunk and large branches are visible through the foliage. But "Carolina Sapphire" is a faster -growing tree than "Blue Iceadding 12 to 32 inches to its height each year. "Blue Ice" has a more moderate growth rate, increasing in height by about io to 18 inches yearly. At maturity, a "Blue Ice" tree can reach a height Of 30 t* 50 feet. "Carolina Sapphire" trees tend to be slightly taller, with the smallest examples at least 40 feet tall when fully grown and large specimens well over 50 feet in height. ii iVirg-, ly, LITETL '17 HITUM-S71—C Mi MV needles arranged in a spiral pattern, completely covering the smaller branches. Although needles on both trees have a bluish color, those on "Carolina Sapphire" are a truer blue, wit teal overtones, compared to those on "Blue Ice." "Blue Ice" needles are often described as tiglaucousa botanical term that refers to a silvery gray color caused by a waxy coating. Its needles can also be flecked with whitish spots of resin, which makes up the waxy coating. Needles on both trees, however, are quite aromatic, especially when crushed. I Both types of Arizona cypress trees are conifers and produce attractive cones each year. Those on the "Carolina Sapphire" cultivar are oval -to -round in shape, appearing first in greenish - silver color and then darkening to a reddish brown.
