REQUEST:
Information Services requests Commission authorization to purchase two (2) VMware host
servers in the amount of $39,548 from CDW-G, from Florida State Contract#43211500-
WSCA-I5-ACS-E, and for the City Manager and City Attorney to prepare and execute any
and all applicable documents.
SYNOPSIS:
The City currently has 6 VMware host servers, 2 of which have reached end of life (EOL)
meaning that they are no longer supported and need to be replaced. We are requesting
Commission authorization to purchase the 2 VMware host servers from CDW-G in the
amount of $39,548 from Florida State Contract #43211500-WSCA-I5-ACS-E, and for the
City Manager and City Attorney to prepare and execute any and all applicable documents.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Virtualization enables the hosting of multiple 'virtual" machines on a single physical server.
A VMware host is a physical server on which multiple "virtual" machines reside. Rather
than purchasing a separate server for each software application and/or database, a VMware
host server can "spin up" multiple virtual servers or machines which share all the resources
of the physical server such as processor, memory, storage, etc.
The benefits of server virtualization include but are not limited to: reduced up-front capital
equipment purchases and physical server sprawl (no need to purchase a server for each
application or database); reduced data center footprint/rack space requirements; reduced
electrical and cooling costs because of less equipment in the data center; and shared
resources resulting in better overall resource utilization.
