SYNOPSIS: This agenda item is presented to update the commission on the introduction of the SHIELD 360 program. CONSIDERATIONS: Recognizing a need for an all- inclusive program to better strengthen the bond between a community and its police department, the Winter Springs Police would like to introduce SHIELD 360. SHIELD 360 was named as such for the shield which police officers wear to symbolize the barrier of protection a police officer puts before them to protect their public. The number 360 stands for the number of degrees that we endeavor to extend our shield of protection. Together, they represent the sphere of knowledge we will use to educate, aid, and protect. Traditionally, law enforcement has been a service of reaction, tending to victims in the aftermath of crime and holding those responsible accountable. SHIELD 360 is built on the premise that those who commit crime will be less likely to do so in a community where the citizens are so overwhelmingly invested in their police department as we currently experience with our community. A community that takes an active interest in their own safety, security, and quality of life will become less likely to become victims or convey a victim mentality. Winter Springs Police SHIELD 360 can take law enforcement in a new Informational 200 PAGE 1 OF 2 - August 24, 2015 direction. With education, community development, child safety, and security awareness programs, SHIELD 360 seeks to further envelop the citizenry and continue to dissolve any "us versus them" mentality.
