HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014 04 14 Reports Resolution 2014-05-Proclamation to Mayor John Land RESOLUTION NUMBER 2014-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA, DECLARING THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2014 AS MAYOR JOHN LAND DAY IN THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, IN RECOGNITION OF HIS MORE THAN 60 YEARS OF SERVICE TO MUNICIPALITIES AND THE CITY OF APOPKA; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Mayor John Horting Land was first elected as Mayor of the City of Apopka in Orange County, Florida in 1949 and served from January 1, 1950 to January 1, 1968; and then was again elected Mayor of the City of Apopka in 1970 and served continuously from January 1, 1971 until the present-April 2014; and WHEREAS, Mayor John Land of the City of Apopka has given many, many years of extraordinarily valuable service to the residents and business community, not only in Apopka but in the central Florida area, of which the citizens and Elected Officials alike, are so very appreciative of; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Winter Springs wish to show their appreciation to Mayor John Land; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Winter Springs with passage of this Resolution, authorizes the Mayor to prepare and execute a Proclamation declaring Thursday, April 17, 2014, Mayor John Land Day in the City of Winter Springs. Now THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA THAT: Section I. The City of Winter Springs City Commission expresses their sincerest appreciation to Mayor John Land of the City of Apopka for his incredible and valuable service to the City of Apopka and to the central Florida community. Section II. The City Commission authorizes the Mayor to prepare and execute a Proclamation declaring Thursday, April 17, 2014 as Mayor John Land Day in the City of Winter Springs. That an original Resolution shall be presented to Mayor John Horting Land of Apopka, and also to the City of Apopka for their records and archives. Section IV. The Proclamation herein referenced is attached to this Resolution and shall be considered part of this Resolution. Section V. That this Resolution shall become effective immediately upon passage and adoption. ADOPTED by the City Commission of the City of Winter Springs, Florida, in a Regular Meeting duly assembled on the 14th day of April 2014. 5Aaoe ifemasse,ege Mt Aa ed and calmed did dad&ie.glikai C •'1 E LA y yor ATTEST: AND ' : its RENZO-LUACES, City Clerk City of Winter Springs,Florida Resolution 2014-05 Page 2 of 2 PROCLAMATI ON .,uiiat OFFICE OF THE MAYOR `;$ i) WINTER.SPRINGS, FLORIDA WHEREAS, MAYOR JOHN HORTING LAND was born in Plant City, and his family moved to Apopka when he was one year old,was educated in Apopka schools and then the University of Florida until he began serving in the Army in June, 1942,in which he served in World War II and participated in two campaigns in the European Theater of Operations;and 1(HEREAS, After the war,JOHN LAND went into the manufacturing business;and then,began his political service first being elected as the Mayor of the City of Apopka in Orange County, Florida in 1949, and served from January 1, 1950 to January 1, 1968;then was again elected Mayor of Apopka in 1970 and has served continuously from January 1, 1971 until the present - April 2014; and has been referred to as the longest serving Mayor in Florida and the longest serving full-time WHEREAS,in the United States of America;and IIHEREAS, MAYOR JOHN LAND has served as a member of numerous community organizations; received many awards and recognitions including the "E. Harris Drew" award - "Municipal Officer of the Year Award" in 1978 from the Florida League of Cities, and is the only individual that sits on the Florida League of Cities' Board of Directors without WHEREAS,or election;and IIHEREAS,MAYOR JOHN LAND in March 2011,was recognized by the Florida House of Representatives with House Resolution 9003 and also by the Florida Senate with Senate Resolution 1576 —both for his many years of public service and for his outstanding contributions to the citizens of the City of Apopka;and WHEREAS, MAYOR JOHN LAND, who through an incredible public service career, including service on the Tri- County League of Cities,together with two terms as President of this fine organization,has improved the quality of life for the Citizens of Apopka,of Orange County,Florida,of the Central Florida community to include our City of Winter Springs. NOW THEREFORE, I, CHARLES LACEY, Mayor of the City of Winter Springs, do hereby acknowledge that it is abundantly fitting and proper that the exceptional accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished public servant be properly recognized,thus I hereby Proclaim that this day of April 17th,2014 be officially declared MAYOR JOHN LAND DAY in the City of Winter Springs, Florida and ask all citizens to recognize and honor this invaluable member of the Central Florida community for his many accomplishments and contributions as one of the finest Statesmen in the land.
