HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011 08 22 Informational 101 Go Local Program COMMISSION AGENDA Consent Informational X ITEM 101 Public Hearing Regular August 22, 2011 Meeting Mgr. / Dept Authorization REQUEST: The Community Development and Information Services Departments wish to update the City Commission on the Go Local Business Initiative. SYNOPSIS: The Go Local initiative began in February 2011 as a tool to actively support and provide momentum for our local economy by promoting existing and newly opened businesses through the provision of an on-line presence as part of the Business Tax Receipt process. The site was tested internally and in July of 2011 notices were sent to all Business Tax owners instructing them how to sign up online for the Go Local Program. Program goals are as follows: Create and Sustain Local Jobs o Introduce Locally-owned Businesses to Locally-owned Businesses and to o potential customers Promote Community Involvement o Keep Our Local Economy Strong o Help the Environment o CONSIDERATIONS: 1.The City of Winter Springs has 527 Commercial Tax Receipt Businesses, 500 Home- Based Tax Receipt Businesses (non-regulated), and 245 Home-Based Tax Receipt Businesses (regulated) for a total of 1,272 Business Tax Receipts. 2.As of the creation of this agenda item, there are 57 businesses utilizing this program. 3.The Go Local Website is being viewed by 400 visitors a week. 4.Additionally, the City has promoted the Go Local Program in the City’s newsletter and website and, in the future, will also promote the service at City Events. 5.The Go Local Program has been featured on WFTV and in the Seminole Chronicle. August 22, 2011 Informational Item 101 Page 2 FISCAL IMPACT: The fiscal impact on the city depends on the amount city employees allocated to the review the online submissions and provide technical support as needed. COMMUNICATION EFFORTS: This Agenda Item has been electronically forwarded to the Mayor and City Commission, City Manager, City Attorney/Staff, and all eAlert/eCitizen recipients; and is available on the City’s website, LaserFiche, and the City’s server. Additionally, portions of this Agenda Item are typed verbatim on the respective meeting agenda which has also been electronically forwarded to the individuals noted above; and which is also available on the City’s website, LaserFiche, and the City’s server; has been sent to City staff, media/press representatives who have requested agendas/agenda item information, homeowner’s associations/representatives on file with the City, and all individuals who have requested such information; and has been posted outside City Hall; posted inside City Hall with additional copies available for the general public; and posted at five (5) different locations around the City. This Agenda Item is also available to any new individual requestors. City Staff is always willing to discuss this or any Agenda Item with any interested individuals. RECOMMENDATION: The Community Development and Information Systems Departments are requesting that the City Commission review and accept the information in this agenda item. ATTACHMENTS: None
