Authorization REQUEST: Land Design Innovations, Inc. (City consultant) is presenting the Summary Report for Economic Development activities from February 29, 2010 through March 31, 2011. The information in this agenda item will be verbally presented under item 302 at the April 11, 2011 City Commission meeting. SYNOPSIS: As part of their contractual economic development efforts for the City, Land Design Innovations (LDI) makes monthly reports to the City Commission summarizing and detailing their efforts on behalf of the City relative to economic development. CONSIDERATIONS: LDI has summarized their efforts relative to their economic development efforts in the following areas: • Project Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium Activities • UCF Class Curriculum Development • Joint Economic Development Task Force • Opportunity Sites Brochure • Economic Development Website • Tax Abatement Program • Recruitment • Retention • Meetings • Upcoming Activities The information in this agenda item will be verbally presented under item 302 at the April 11, 2011 Commission meeting. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with this agenda item. COMMUNICATION EFFORTS: This Agenda Item has been forwarded to the Mayor and City Commission; City Manager; City Attorney /Staff; placed in Press Packets; placed in the City Hall (Lobby) City Commission Meeting binder; and is available on the City's Website, LaserFiche, and the City's Server. Additionally, information related to this Agenda Item has been sent to media /press representatives who have requested Agendas /Agenda Item information, all Homeowner's Associations on file with the City, all individuals who have requested Agendas /Agenda Item information, Department Directors; and also posted outside City Hall; posted inside City Hall with additional copies available for the general public; and posted at five (5) different locations around the City. RECOMMENDATIONS: The City Commission is being asked to review and accept the information in this agenda item. Randy Stevenson, Community Development Director John Jones, AICP, Senior Planner April 4, 2011 Minter Springs Economic Development Program — SummaiT Report The following activities occurred between February 26, 2011 and March 31, 2011 of the Economic Development project: 1. Proiect Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium Activities: ■ Continued follow up discussions with City staff, County staff and UCF ■ Continuation of recruitment of primary targeted industries to the surrounding properties around Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC). 2. UCF Class Curriculum Development ■ Presented and discussed Minter Springs Economic Development programming and marketing materials with Dr. Hawkin's class. ■ A meeting with Dr. Hawkins' class and local development stakeholders is tentatively to occur in early April. 3. joint Economic Development Task Force (JEDTF) ■ Continued coordination with the ED task force members. • The March 24, 2011 Joint ED Task Force meeting was cancelled. ■ Committ is likely to be dissolved and possibly restarted as a private orga ■ Followed up on initial JEDTF action to meet with incubator clients, discuss client needs and present Twin Cities Economic Development programs and available sites and facilities. 4. Brochure ■ Approximately 300 brochures have been distributed thus far. Website • LDI provided support to the IS department in the development of the www.winterspri.ngs.bia website. • The first iteration (1.0) of the website was completed. • Coordinating with local, state and regional ED organizations to host the City's ED link on their websites for maximum exposure. G. Tax Abatement Program ■ J. Jones is continuing to provide guidance regarding the establishment (operational language) of this program. 7. Recruitment • LDI transmitted a request to local realtors and the Metro Orlando EDC for the availability of a 72,000 square foot site /facility for a bio -fuels electric vehicle manufacturing company. (Project Cricket) • Distributed brochure and marketing materials to various high technology companies. S. Retention • Continued monthly incubator visits with incubator clients and staff to discuss retention in the area. (See J EDTF entry) • Incubator informational session, Pizza Break, was conducted with physical and virtual clients to discuss programs and retention in the City. 9.
