The proposed research and development site would provide 400 E. Lake Mary Boulevard unique learning opportunities for the students of Seminole County Public Schools, and more Sanford, Florida 32773 -7127 specifically, students at the nearby Winter Springs High School. Phone: (407) 320 -0000 Fax: (407) 320 -0281 In January 2011, Winter Springs High School will begin the planning process for an innovative new solar energy course sequence utilizing a $5,000 start-up grant from Walt Disney World. The course sequence, Solar Energy 1 Honors and Solar Energy II Honors, will engage students SCHOOL BOARD in learning on the vital conversion of the sun's power to electricity through the use of photovoltaic cells. Through the planning process, the school will be prepared to launch both SANDRA ROBINSON Chairman courses in the coming school years. JEANNE MORRIS The purpose of these courses is two -fold: Vice Chairman 1. To teach the students the physics behind photovoltaic solar arrays, including electric DIANE BAUER circuits and solar insolation; and, Board Member 2. To prepare the students to earn nationally recognized certification as Entry Level Photovoltaic Installers by taking the North American Board of Certified Energy SYLVIA POND Board Member Practitioners (NABCEP) exam at the end of the course. DEDE SCHAFFNER As preparation for the NABCEP exam, students will participate in hands -on laboratory work Board Member with full -size solar panels and the accompanying electrical equipment, including grid -tied inverters and electrical panels and disconnects. Individual projects will be completed that culminate with each student assembling a complete solar array design package suitable for applying for a construction permit for a residential or light commercial building. The district is enthusiastic about the potential linkages between the consortium and Winter Springs High School. As such, the district is a willing partner in the process. A partnership with research and manufacturing industries within the consortium would allow the benefit of local laboratory sites, expertise, and mentorship to students. Seminole County Public Schools believes this project is valuable not only to the citizens of Winter Springs and Seminole County alike, but also to the students of our school district. We look forward to a future of collaboration with the Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium. Sincerely, itt a Bill Vogel Superintendent Visit Our Web Site www.scps.us
