Authorization
REQUEST:
Information Services requests authorization to dispose of
broken, old or obsolete cellular telephones by donating
them to Safe House of Seminole located in Sanford.
PURPOSE:
To obtain authorization to dispose of old, broken, obsolete cellular
telephones by donation to Safe House of Seminole.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Cellular phones break, become obsolete or discontinued. Information Services needs
to be able to properly dispose of them. A survey of surrounding cities revealed that
most donate their phones to Safe House of Seminole which is a shelter for victims of
domestic violence. They will take phones even if they no longer work. If the phones
cannot be repaired, they are sold for parts and the proceeds go back to the shelter. If
they can be repaired, they are used for the domestic abuse victims to be able to dial 9-
1-1.
Cellular phones are considered e-waste and are supposed to be recycled or disposed of
properly. If we do not donate the phones, we are required to take them to a facility that
accepts e-waste and will be charged a fee to dispose of them.
