Authorization AWARDS AND PRESENTATIONS 100. Police Department Presentation Honoring Officer Dan Grieb And Lieutenant Kevin Presley. WINTER SPRINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT LIFE SAVING A WARD In November 2002, the Winter Springs Police Department came to the commission with a request to purchase 2 Automated External Defibulators .(AED) from the Special Law Enforcement Trust Fund. The Commission approved the request and the Police Department placed the AED's in service to have one available on each side of the city. Frequently, officers in the field may be closer to victims of sudden cardiac arrest than available Advanced Life Support Units. In Seattle Washington, the survival rate for people suffering sudden cardiac arrest is the highest of any city in the Country. In Seattle, AED's are placed in all police vehicles due to their mobility and availability. This factor is credited with the high survivability rate in their community. Currently, Winter Springs and Lake Mary are the only 2 cities in Seminole County that have AED's in their police vehicles. On August 22, 2004, Lance Corporal Dan Grieb and Lieutenant Kevin Presley responded to a call of a man having a heart attack. (Lance Corporal Dan Grieb and Lieutenant Kevin Presley please come forward) Lance Corporal Grieb and Lieutenant Presley responded to 63] Pearl Road and found Mr. William Adamson, a 56 year old male on a hallway floor. Lieutenant Presley checked for a pulse on evidence of breathing and found none. Lance Corporal Grieb and Lieutenant Presley attached the AED to Mr. Adamson and after the AED cycled through a series of tests, Lance Corporal Grieb administered a shock. The AED then signaled for the initiation of CPR and CPR was then performed by Grieb and Presley. Lance Corporal Grieb began rescue breathing and Lieutenant Presley conducted chest compressions. They both continued CPR until Winter Springs Fire and Rescue arrived. Winter Springs Rescue personnel immediately began applying their skills and provided additional care with a piece of their new equipment that performs CPR more efficiently than human administered CPR. Winter Springs Rescue personnel were able to determine that Mr. Adamson had a heart beat and he was transported to the hospital. He was later flown to a second hospital where he successfully underwent emergency heart surgery. He has since made a full recovery. . Lance Corporal Grieb and Lieutenant Presley have earned the Winter Springs Police Department Life Saving A ward.
