Authorization REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department is presenting to the City Commission, The Sports Field Complex of the Year Award and introduce the Central Winds Park Staff. . PURPOSE: " The present award and recognize staff. CONSIDERATIONS: The City of Winter Springs "Central Winds Park" was selected by the Sports Turf Managers Association as the best Parks and Recreation Sports Complex in the Nation. The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) is recognized as the leader in championing the Sports Turf Industry and it Professionals. The STMA was organized in 1981 and has 2,500 members worldwide. Association members come from all areas of the Sports Turf Industry including Professional and Minor League Ranks, Colleges and Universities, Public Schools and Municipal Recreation Departments. STMA members are experts on athletic fields and leaders in tile field. Also they possess the knowledge to maintain the safest playing fields in order to protect the future and well-being of every athlete. The commitment to excellence in overall field quality, safety, playability and appearance throughout the athletic field program earned "Central Winds Park" the Sports Field Complex of the Year Honor. The Sports Fields Complex of the Year Award is the highest honor STMA b(~stows upon a facility. Entrants must supply information on the design of all the athletic fields within the facility, the uses of the facility that impact the playing surface, the organization of the maintenance program and Innovative solutions used to overcome playing surface problems. Photos of specific areas of each of the fields must be provided to document the playability and appearance of the playing surfaces. Each of the five judges on the awards committee reviews the entrants independently, grading them on each aspect of the criteria. The results of the independent input of the five judges determine the winning complex. City staffwas honored at the annual STMA Conference Awards Banquet on January 23, 2004. The City of Winter Springs Sport Complex will also be featured in the STMA National Publication "Sports Turf' Magazine in the fall of2004. The Parks and Recreation staff members that maintain Central Winds Park are: Tina Kimball, Sports Field Crew Chief, Paula Nunnery, Lead Maintenance Worker and Maintenance Workers Richard Bullard, Chelsie Myers, Vernon Prawl, Morris Ralls, and Bonita Roberts.
