HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003 04 28 Consent L Police Purchases COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM L CONSENT X INFORMATIONAL PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR April 28.2003 Meeting MGR {/A- /DEPT~ ~ Authorization REQUEST: Police Department requests the Commission to give approval for the purchase of (8) Level Four Protective Vests, (26) Level Four Trauma Plates, (12) High Risk Entry Optics from the Special Law Enforcement Fund. (State and Federal Asset Forfeitures) . PURPOSE: To seek the consent of the Commission to approve the purchase of these items to assist the Police Department in providing the community with the highest level of public safety available. The continuing growth of the City will require the Police Department to be more adequately equipped to meet the growing needs of the community and to address the ever present concerns of domestic security. The cost of this equipment is $21,482.00. CONSIDERA nONS: Communities surrounding Winter Springs are experiencing an increase in their responses to violent acts against the public. The police department has participated in numerous training exercises with other federal, state and local agencies specifically, "Active Shooter" (persons actively shooting inside schools and workplaces), "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and "High Risk Entries" designed to better prepare our personnel to respond to these types of critical incidents. Should the police department ever have to respond to a critical incident or terrorist threat of this nature, this equipment will be necessary to insure that the safety of the public and responding officers is sufficient. Listed below is a list of the equipment and the associated prices. . 8 Level IV protective vests @ $1,224.00 ea total $9,792.00 . 26 Level IV Trauma Plates @ $270.00 ea total $ 7,020.00 . 12 High Risk Entry Optics @ $385.00 ea total $4.620.00 Total $21,482.00 FUNDING: All funding will come from the existing Special Law Enforcement Fund of approximately $75,000. There will be no impact to the current fiscal budget. RECOMMENDATION: Approve the proposal and expenditure of$21,482.00 from the Special Law Enforcement Fund.
