HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004 01 12 Informational 308COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM 308 January 12, 2004 Meeting CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR MGR/`_ /DEPT Authorization ` REQUEST: Fire Department informing the City Commission of approval for 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to be used for Fire Station 24 fire sprinkler/alarm system, and diesel smoke filters for fire apparatus. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the Commission that the Fire Department has been awarded a Federal Grant for $65,979 with the Federal Emergency Management Agency / Assistance to Firefighters Grant :Program 2003, with the purpose of Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety to install a fire sprinkler and alarm system for Fire Station 24, and to purchase and install "NO SMOKE" diesel filters on all fire apparatus. CONSIDERATIONS: The Fire Department requested and was approved to apply for a 90/10 Federal Grant for firefighter operations and firefighter safety equipment for $73,310 with the City's share being $7,331. The grant award notification was received in December 2003 and the funds will need to be expended within 11 months. In the grant request, the :Department outlined the need for a fire sprinkler and alarm system for Fire Station 24 at 102 North Moss Road that was built in 1974 and did not incorporate these safety features. In addition, the department requested a diesel exhaust filtering system for all fire apparatus that removes hazardous vapors. Both of these requested items will enhance our ability to protect the health, safety and welfare of employees and visitors to the fire department. Informational Agenda Item 308 January 12, 2004 Page 2 FUNDING: The funds will be received from the Federal Government and will be deposited in the General Fund and will be made available to purchase and install the described equipment as prescribed in the grant. RECOMMENDATION: For informational purposes only no action required. IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE: Funds will be deposited upon receipt and installation will be completed within the next 9 months.
