Authorization REQUEST: The Public Works Department recommends the removal of trees located at City Hall that are currently a maintenance problem due to health and location. PURPOSE: Inform Commission of plan for removal and replacement of trees at City Hall and future landscaping. CONSIDERA TIONS: 1) There are (5) oak trees at City Hall causing damage to the roof and drainage system. All trees are in close proximity to the building and as a result, leaves are collecting on the roof in key locations which has contributed to recent leaks at City Hall. Additionally, root systems are intetfering with drainage piping which is vital in evacuation of water from the rooftop. At least (2) trees are infected with mistletoe (a parasite) . The RO.W.S. Board and Urban Beautification Coordinator have developed a plan for new landscaping. The plan consists of (2) Phases: Phase 1 - Remove (5) Oak trees and install (7) Queen palm, (3) Ligustrum trees, (5) Dahoon holly, (2) Magnolia tree and (1) Red oak tree. Phase 2 - Remove dated plants and install new landscaping according to the attached plan. 2) August 25, 2003 Informational Agenda Item C Page 2 FUNDING: The cost of phase 1 removal and replacement shall come from the City Arbor Fund and performed under the direct supervision of Mike Mingea, City Forester and Steven Richart, Urban Beautification Coordinator. IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE: Phase 1 - Work shall begin immediately to prevent further damages to the City Hall roofand drainage piping. Phase 2 - Work to be scheduled for the end of March 2004.
