Z ' /DEPT Meeting Authorization REQUEST: Public Works Department is advising the City Commission on the response from Mallard Systems about the spill in Greenbriar PURPOSE: This agenda item is to update the Commission on the Greenbriar spill response. CONSIDERATION: The City Commission requested staff pursue the complaint about the chemical spill in the. Greenbriar subdivision by Mallard Systems. Mallard Systems was performing roof cleaning services in Greenbriar when a broken valve caused the chemicals to spill on the roadway as they were leaving. Mallard utilized a hydrant to wash down the road. Attached is a response from the Territory Manager relative to this situation. Staff has reviewed the response and believe the actions taken were appropriate. We will be sending them a bill for $10 for the water usage and administrative costs. ATTACHMENTS: 1. Mallard Systems letter of December 16, 2003 COMMISSION ACTION: S Y S T E M STM America's Roof & ExteYloi- Cleaning Specialists 7-7 December 16, 2003 Mr. Kip Lockcuff 1126 S.R. 434 Winter Springs, FL 32708 Dear Kip, I'm writing this letter in response to the phone call I received from you regarding the Greenbriar Subdivision. On Saturday November 22, 2003 at 10:20am I received a phone call from the HOA president saying that one of our trucks had leaked chemical in the subdivision. At 11:15am I arrived, along with our service manager, to find that in fact there was chemical on the street. Seeing as how it did not spill in one spot and was spread out, we determined that any action by the fire department or Hazmat was not required. However, we also decided that an immediate rinsing of the effected roads was needed to prevent any potential damage to the grass, storm drains, and pond. In order to accomplish this, we used the fire hydrants in the subdivision instead of using the individual homeowners metered water. Our efforts worked and there was no damage to anything other then some salt staining of the roads, which will come out over time. I estimate we used 500 gallons of water and would be more then happy to pay the city for it. I also believe, that by us handling the problem this way, we saved the city and the taxpayers money. I apologize if this was not the correct protocol but due to the circumstances, I believe we handled the situation as best we could. If you have any questions or require further explanation, please feel free to call me any time at 407-310- 7418.
