PURPOSE: The purpose of this Commission item is to gain Commission authority to authorize the City Manager to award a contract for emergency building repairs to Fire Station # 24 at 102 North Moss Road and Fire Station # 26 at 850 Northern Way for an amount not to exceed $17,000.00 and to request a supplemental funding appropriation of$17,000 from the General Fund reserves to fund the request. CONSIDERATIONS: Fire Stations # 24 and # 26 were both originally constructed of natural (non-painted) concrete exteriors. During the Hurricane season of 2004 and 2005 the Fire Department experienced water intrusion into the building through the exterior walls which damaged some of the drywall, carpet and interior furnishings. All the interior damages have been repaired, however to prevent further water intrusion, exterior preparation and coatings are required to be applied to the exterior surfaces of the buildings. Furthermore the external sealing of these buildings will prevent mold and mildew growth between the interior walls and the external walls. The Fire Department has contacted contractors to receive quotes to properly prepare the exterior of the buildings and to apply coatings which will prevent water intrusion. All contractors were provided with a scope of work that would properly remediate the problem and to also add color to the exterior of the buildings so that the structures would fit better into the community. After all quotes are received per the scope of service a recommendation to the City Manager will be made for decision to November 28, 2005 Consent Agenda Item "201" Page 2 select the contractor that will complete this project. The Fire Department is therefore recommending that the City Commission approve this request and is requesting funding for this proj ect for an amount not to exceed $17,000.00 from the General Fund Reserves due to the emergency nature of this problem. FUNDING: The funding was not requested or approved in this current year budget, but due to the emergency nature of this problem the Fire Department is requesting funding for an amount not to exceed $17,000 from the General Fund Reserves. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Manager be authorized to award a contract for building repairs for Fire Station 24 at 102 North Moss Road and Fire Station 26 at 850 Northern Way for an amount not to exceed $17,000.00 from the General Fund Reserves.
