HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005 11 28 Informational 302 COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM 302 CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR November 28, 2005 MGR r fDEPT .:J/ r:!t Meeting Authorization REQUEST: The Fire Department requests that the City Commission review The City of Winter Springs participation in the "Gifts for the Gulf' program to be held from November 21 through December 9, 2005. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to assure that the City Commission is informed of all the pertinent details regarding this activity. CONSIDERATIONS: . Seminole County Government, the seven cities, Chamber of Commerce, Seminole County School Board and area church and business groups have joined together to bring holiday cheer to the residents of Pass Christian, Mississippi. . Hurricane Katrina destroyed eighty-percent of the small coastal city. Through a multi- jurisdictional coalition, many county and city employees have personally seen the devastation and visited the city to assist with the on-going recovery efforts. Many residents, hoping to rebuild their homes and lives in Pass Christian are now moving into "tent villages" with little to no personal belongings. . After assessing the needs of the community, a holiday drive titled "Gifts for the Gulf' has been organized to help gather donations in hopes of bringing some relief to these residents. The DuPont Company is providing semi trucks to transport all of the donated items to Pass Christian just in time for the holidays. _ November 28,2005 Informational Agenda Item 302 Page 2 . The general public is invited to drop off donations at any fire station located in Seminole County from November 21 to December 9,2005. . Residents are in need of all the basic living essentials, however, the specific items requested are: . . New, unwrapped toys, bikes, games, puzzles, books, crosswords . . Toiletries (especially gift sets), cologne, perfume, shower caddies . . New (any size), shoes, pajamas, slippers, robes, hats . . New socks and underwear . . Sheets, pillows, towels, shower curtains and other linen .. . Blankets and sleeping bags . . Battery operated portable lights and alarm clocks . . New Child/Infant car seats . . Folding Chairs, card tables and door mats . . Non-perishable food and coolers .. . First aid kits and bug spray . . Luggage and area rugs . . Eating utensils and food storage containers FUNDING: No additional funding is required for this activity. RECOMMENDATION: Informational purposes only, however we encourage employees and citizens to drop-off the listed items at any Fire Station including Winter Springs City Hall until December 9,2005.
