PURPOSE: The purpose of this board item is to inform the Commission that the Police Department has received International Accreditation by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CLEA). CONSIDERATIONS: On November 19, 2005 the Winter Springs Police Department was awarded the status of an Internationally Accredited Law Enforcement Agency by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies at a National Commission meeting in Nashville Tennessee. The Police Department is the only municipality in Seminole County, Orange County, Brevard County, Osceola County, and Lake County to be internationally accredited by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. There are currently only 21 Police Departments in Florida that have achieved full CALEA Accreditation. The accreditation process required an in-depth review of every aspect of the agency's organization, management, operations, and administration. The Commission was impressed with interaction between the officers and the community and particularly interested in the fact that Code Enforcement was handled by the Police Department. The review also highlighted our crime analysis capabilities. The agency must stay in compliance with the standards set forth by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The Police Department will be evaluated again in three years for re-certification. The Winter Springs Police Department has set a standard in this city to deliver quality service in order to ensure the highest quality of life possible. The Department is proud of this latest accomplishment and will continue to strive for improvement in every aspect of our duties. FUNDING: None at this time. RECOMMENDATION: None at this time.
