HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006 11 13 Regular 302 Inauguration Ceremonies COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM 302 Regular November 13. 2006 Regular Meeting Authorization REQUEST: The City Clerk is requesting the City Commission decide upon the time when the 2006 Inauguration Ceremonies should be held. Additionally, the City Commission is also being asked to consider and approve the information in this Agenda Item regarding some of the details planned for the upcoming Inauguration Ceremonies. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Agenda Item is for the City Commission to decide the time when the next Inauguration Ceremonies will be held; and to consider the information in this Agenda Item regarding some of the details planned for the upcoming Inauguration Ceremonies. CONSIDERATIONS: Pursuant to Section 4.03 "Election and terms." of the Charter of the City of Winter Springs, "The terms of the mayor and commissioner shall begin the first Monday after the first day of December of each year an election is held." CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA CITY COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING - NOVEMBER 13,2006 REGULAR AGENDA ITEM "302" PAGE 2 0F 3 The following is an excerpt from Commissioner Sally McGinnis' Report at the October 9,2006 Regular City Commission Meeting: Commissioner McGinnis asked when the next Swearing-In Ceremony would take place after the November Election. City Clerk Lorenzo-Luaces read from the Charter and stated that Terms of Office begin "The first Monday after the first day of December of each year an election is held. " Mayor Bush pointed out that that date would be December lh, 2006. With discussion, Mayor Bush noted, "So it will be on December lh, time will be determined after the Election. " Therefore, the date for the first day in office and any Inauguration Ceremony for the newly elected Mayor, Commissioner - District Two, and Commissioner - District Four will be held on Monday, December 4,2006. (A Regular City Commission Meeting is not scheduled on this date.) As no specific time for the Inauguration Ceremonies is stipulated in the Charter, and the City Commission did not agree upon a certain time during the above referenced discussion held on October 9, 2006, the City Commission is being requested to decide upon a time for this event. The City Commission may wish to take into consideration the preferences of any individual(s) that are (Re-)Elected and/or who currently do not serve on the City Commission. (Note: As this Agenda Item was submitted prior to the outcome of the November 7, 2006 Municipal Election, the individuals Elected on November 7, 2006 will be informed of this Agenda Item and invited to attend the November 13, 2006 City Commission Meeting, to provide any input, if requested by the City Commission). As in years past, some of the proposed details of the upcoming Inauguration Ceremonies will include: Invitations for guests of the three (3) Elected individuals; Commemorative Programs; a Swearing-in Ceremony; Photographs; other miscellaneous items; and a Reception to be held in the lobby of City Hall following the Swearing-in Ceremony. The details and related costs will be similar to previous years, with funds provided through the Commission's Promotional Line Code. CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA CITY COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING - NOVEMBER 13,2006 REGULAR AGENDA ITEM "302" PAGE 3 0F 3 RECOMMENDATION: The following recommendation/Motion is suggested: I would like to make a Motion that we hold the 2006 Inauguration Ceremony on Monday, December 4, 2006 at a.m./p.m. with the Inauguration Ceremony being similar to the last few City of Winter Springs' Inauguration Ceremonies, in costs and in style.
