PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission about this National Recognition. CONSIDERATION: . The Sports Turf Managers Association Awards Programs are the most prestigious in the Nation. . On October 15, 2003 Parks and Recreation Staff submitted an application for the complex of the year award. . On November 19, 2003, Staff was informed in writing that Central Winds Park was selected as the High School/Parks Sports Complex of the year. . I'm pleased to officially inform you that City of Winter Springs, Central Winds Park has been selected High SchoollParks Sports Complex of the Year. The entire committee extends their congratulations to you and all those connected with your facility. We hope that you will be able to attend the 15th Annual STMA Conference and Exhibition in San Diego, California, on January 21 5t through the 25th, 2004. The Awards Presentation will occur during the annual banquet, held Friday, January 23rd, from 7:30 to 10:00 PM, at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center (the headquarters hotel for the Conference). Again this year, the Awards Sponsors -- Bayer Environmental Science; Carolina Green Corp.; Covermaster Inc.; Hunter Industries; Jacobsen, A Textron Company; Nu-Gro Technologies, Inc.; Turface; Turf-Seed, Inc.; and West Coast Turf -- are funding registration to the STMA Annual Conference & Exhibition for one individual from each Field of the Year Award recipient, and up to $500 towards travel/lodging expenses for the Conference for that individual. The Award presentation will take place during the STMA Awards Banquet to be held on January 23,2004, in San Diego, California, in conjunction with the Association's annual conference. Chuck Pula, the City of Winter Springs Parks and Recreation Director, says, "Nestled among the 72 acres of Central Winds Park is a jewel of a sports complex encompassing two baseball fields, two softball fields and four soccer fields. Because of the excellent quality of the fields and facilities, more and more organizations are lining up to use the complex. In 2003, 2,600 games were played on the fields, drawing nearly 130,000 participants and spectators. Tina Kimball, Central Winds Park Sports Field Crew Chief, and her staff are focused on providing the best possible playing surface for all the participants because we believe Central Winds Park is more than just a place to play - it is a place for lives to be touched." The commitment to excellence in overall field quality, safety, playability and appearance throughout the athletic field program earned Central Winds Park the Sports - more - * NEWS RELEASE * The City of Winter Springs Central Winds Park Earns Sports Field Complex Award Page 2 Field Complex of the Year honors. The Sports Field Complex of the Year Award was established in 2003 as an addition to the STMA Field of the Year Awards which are presented for top maintenance of natural playing surfaces and support facilities in four major sports areas: baseball, softball, football and soccer. The Field of the Year and Sports Field Complex of the Year Awards are the highest honor STMA bestows upon a facility. Entrants must supply information on the design of the all of the athletic fields within the facility, the uses of the facility that impact the playing surface, the organization of the maintenance program and innovative solutions used to overcome playing surface problems. Photos of specific areas of each of the field must be provided to document the playability and appearance of the playing surfaces. Each of the five judges on the Awards Committee review the entrants independently, grading them on each aspect of the criteria. The results of the independent input of the five judges determine the winning field. The Sports Turf Managers Association is the professional association for sports turf managers from around the world.
