HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005 09 26 Informational 303 COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM 303 Consent Informational X Public Hearing Regular September 26, 2005 Regular Meeting REQUEST: The Community Development Department, Urban Beautification Services Division And The Parks Department Wish To Update The City Commission On The Status Of The Florida Urban And Community Forestry Emergency Hurricane Supplemental Grant Applications Submitted By Staff In June 2005. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to update the City Commission on the status of recent Emergency Hurricane Grant Applications with the State of Florida, Department of Forestry. CONSIDERATIONS: . On June 13, 2005, the City Commission approved submission of Hurricane Forestry Grants for up to $175,000, to be used for restoration efforts in response to (3) Hurricanes that devastated Central Florida in late 2004. The grants would pay up to 75% of the total of each project cost. . On September 19, 2005, Staff was provided the following status on the grant applications: o The 2006 Arbor Day Tree Giveaway has been funded for a total grant of $ 5,000. The City gave away over 700 trees at no cost to residents in 2005 as part of the Tree City USA Program at Arbor Day. o The Hurricane Tree Trimming and Remediation Project has been funded for Winter Springs Boulevard and Tuskawilla Road, Rights-of-Way and Medians, at a total grant of$18,750. o The Central Winds Tree Grant Project has been funded for $66,879. Trees planted in the Central Winds Expansion Area would serve as wind buffers during Item 303 - September 26, 2005 a storm event as well as aiding in the reforestation of the City's Parks System. The City of Winter Springs submitted a total of (3) Hurricane Grant Applications; (2) ranking 8th place, and the third ranking 56th place, out of several hundred applications submitted throughout the State of Florida. FUNDING: The City of Winter Springs match of$27,969.75 will come from the Arbor Fund (110). RECOMMENDATIONS: None Required. IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE: October 2005 Staff attends mandatory State Forestry Workshop to receIve grant agreements and discuss project timelines. Execution of grant agreements.
