HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002 05 13 Informational B City of Winter Springs Employee Blood Drive COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM B CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR Meeting MGRf!nEPT JjA Authorization 13 May 2002 REQUEST: The Fire Department requests that the City Commission review the results ofthe City of Winter Springs Employee Blood Drive. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to update the City Commission on the results of this activity held on Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Central Florida Blood Bank, Winter Springs Office (Badcock Plaza). CONSIDERATIONS: . The donation of blood helps to assure an adequate and safe supply of blood and blood products to the community. . The employees of the City of Winter Springs have for 21 years maintained a blood reserve account with the Central Florida Blood Ban1e Last year when the blood drive was schedule, 53 participants registered for the blood drive, and 48 pints of blood was collected. . Employees were encouraged to donate blood and were given the opportunity to donate during their workday. . The goal for this drive was set for 50 pints of blood. . The Central Florida Blood and Tissue Bank inform that most donor sites attract approximately 10 percent of the employees. May 13, 2002 Informational Agenda Item "B" Page 2 RESULTS: · 77 participants attempted to donate blood, and 63 pints of blood was collected. . Of the 249 current City Employees 31 % attempted to donate blood. . This has been the most successful Blood Drive for the City of Winter Springs. The previous record was set back in April 1997 when 62 pints of blood was collected. During the years 1998 through 2001 we were only able to collect approximately 50 pints each year. The Blood Bank informs us that donor participation is down since the beginning of the calendar year after the Septernber 11,2001 record blood donations, as well as more people are rejected because of the screening process. Weare hopeful that next years drive will even be more successful than this year. Furthermore, employees are encouraged to donate throughout the year to help elirninate the blood shortage crisis. . The rnost successful blood drive occurred this year April 2002 where 63 pints of blood were collected. FUNDING: No additional funding was required for this activity. RECOMMENDATION: None informational use only. IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE: The Blood Drive will be scheduled again in April 2003. ATTACHMENTS: N/A COMMISSION ACTION:
