It is not the responsibility of the schools . Our 15 year old has been taught by us and practicing for 6 months - still could use other instructor input... as a matter of public safety, a consistent approach to driver education would be very useful . This is excellent - make it work . This is a wonderful idea. This day and age, kids get their license at a young age. More classroom training and learning about safe driving is more important than just road time. . I strongly believe in driver education. Kids should not just spend 10 minutes behind the wheel in a school parking lot during the summer program. They should spend time on the road with a certified driver ed teacher. Raise driving age to 18 . I am willing to pay a fee. . When I was in high school, I took driver ed course during the school year and it was very beneficial to me. I hope the school board will once again offer the course for my son. . Honestly, I cannot understand why driver education cannot be mandatory for drivers younger than 18 . I believe driver education should be a top priority for Seminole County especially since we have severe traffic in Central Florida · Course needs to be more in-depth and include more hands on driving than in current summer school. . Very important for teens in Fla. . Too many are getting killed . Few things are more important than the safety of our children . Change the driver license age to 18 and change the foolish convenience of kids taking a written test on the internet. · Great idea - I would love to see driver education expanded. 3 children in our house 22, 29 and 15 - none had driver ed and combined they have had about 12 accidents. . I would support no cost but, I would be willing to pay. . Current statistics show that there is a need, not to mention insurance premiums . This should be mandatory! . I do not believe this should come out of academic funding. . If they fail, they should not get their license for an extra year! . Thank you for the opportunity to answer these questions. City funding would help. .~II: . Kids need real world, real traffic experience. At WSHS, kids never leave the parking lot. · Because it is only available in the summer, I had to teach my children to drive. It is very stressful and I am concerned about her learning the proper rules of the road. · My son took an outside driving course. I think all children need this training. . I support any programs to protect our children and citizens. · Perhaps free/reduced lunch students could receive education free and other could pay a fee when funding from other sources (city /county) do not cover expenses. Fees are charged for after school activities, this seems no different. . The State should make some classroom and driving hours mandatory with an official instructor before issuing a license to a 16 year old. Not the responsibility of the school. · Why can't driver ed be during school course offered through PE? . Working parents really could use the help. · Absolutely, the more driver education offered by someone other than the parent (who they won't listen to!) the better!! · Each and every person in our community is affected by a new teenage driver. Some parents will or do not choose to TEACH their own teenager to drive. Many adults have developed poor driving habits: eating, drinking, smoking and talking excessively on their cell phones. New teenage drivers think these examples are good to follow. . . This should be an extraordinary class headed by instructors with unblemished driving records. . .it should be someone with a passion to turn a teen into a responsible driver.. . you must be willing to go the extra distance to do it right. Make this an exemplary program other communities choose to emulate. . Driver education is critical important. However, what I have seen in summer school, I do not believe is effective. Groups/classes are too large- students spend the majority oftheir time waiting for their turn. Perhaps have a lab fee to cover the cost. . Our son lost out on this summer's lottery for driver ed. .. we are very upset. . The sooner the better. . . . It would alleviate some of the parents' worries and fears knowing that driver education is offered and is extensive. . I went to HS and everyone took driver ed as a class and got credit, what happened? With both parents working, who has time to teach their kids to drive well? That's why there are so many teen accidents. . Could this be incorporated into one 9 weeks of Life management? Needs to be mandatory for all students. Having taught 2 to drive I feel like I have forgotten to teach them something important - things we take for granted like always being on the offense. At present, many students teach themselves to drive because of lack of parent involvement. · We feel it is easily within the scope of the parents' responsibility to teach safe and defensive driving to their teens. · This would limit many students due to mandatory sport practices. I feel strongly about this being offered during school hours. · It is a travesty that Seminole County does not offer driver ed. We need desperately to get the program in ASAP. · With no formal driver education required, you are relying solely on the driving/teaching skills of the parents. Yikes! Florida has the most lax drivers requirements of any place I have been.. . Evening class should also be considered. If you are able to add more opportunities for the students, I hope many students will take advantage of them. It is sometimes hard to get them to make use of something if it is not required.
