REQUEST: The Flre Department requests that the City Commission review the results ufthe
City ofWinler Springs Employee Blood Drive.
PURPOSE: The purpose ofthis item is to update the City Commission on the results of this
activity held on Monday, April 18 through Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Florida's
Blood Centers, Winter Springs Office, 268 East SR 434.
CONSIDERA nONS:
. The donation of blood helps to assure an adequate and safe supply of blood and blood
products to the community.
. The employees ufthe City of Winter Springs have for 24 years maintained a hlood reserve
account with Florida's Blood Centers. Last year when the blood drive was schedule, 35
participants attempted to donate and this year we increased our numbers by 6 with 41
attempting to donate.
. Employees were encouraged to donatc blood and were given the opportunity to donate during
their workday.
. The goal for this drive was set for 50 participants.
. The Florida's Blood and Tissue Centers inform that most donor sites attract approximately 10
percent of the employees.

RESULTS:
. 41 participants attempted to donate blood, and the amount of blood collected is confidential
infonnation.
. Of thc 200 plus City Employees, over 17% attempted to donate blood.
. This was not the most successful Blood Drive for the City of Winter Springs. The previous
record was set back in April 2002 when 63 plnts of blood was collected. The Blood Bank
infonns us that donor participation is down and encourages all to donate more frequently. We
are hopeful that next years drive will even be more successful than this year. Furthermore,
employees are encouraged to donate throughout the year to help eliminate the blood shortage
cnS1S.
FUNDING:
No additional funding was required for this activity.
RECOMMENDATION:
None infonnational use only.
IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE:
The Blood Drive will be scheduled again in April 2006.
