HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001 08 13 Informational B Mosquito Control Measures - Summer 2001 COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM B CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR August 13, 2001 Meeting MGR ~EPT jJ'f/ Authorization REQUEST: Inform Commission of action taken by the Public Works Department in Mosquito Control Measures - Summer 2001. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Board item is to inform and advise the Commission of the mosquito control measures and action by the Public Works Department. CONSIDERA TIONS: The recent discovery of West Nile Virus in Florida and the media attention has created an impact on the number of mosquito complaints to the Public Warks office. In addition, the recent summer storm events created optimum breeding sites and mosquito activity_ Last summer in the period of June 1,2000 to October 1,2000, Public Works received 116 mosquito complaints compared to this summer's period of June 1,2001 to August 1,2001 with 266 complaints. It requires 27.5 gallons of mosquito adulticide chemical, 3 HPLV (high pressure/low volume) spray units with truck and driver 3.5 hours to spray the entire city. In addition the Public Works Department is actively treating breeding areas with 1arvacides that aid in the control of the mosquito population. August 13,2001 Informational Agenda Item B Page 2 The current balance of$7,525.00 in the Mosquito Chemical line code 4410-55280 will allow for the purchase of 165 gallons of product which will facilitate 6 more weekly treatments of the entire City through mid-September. There is currently sufficient stock oflarviciding chemicals to treat breeding sites for this season. FUNDING: The mosquito control program is funded through General Fund - Mosquito Chemicals, 4410-55280 with a starting budget of$10,000. There are sufficient funds for six more sprayings this fiscal year. RECOMMENDA TION: It is recommended that the Public Works Department continue to monitor and log calls and spray based on the approved methods of mosquito control. IMPLEMENTA TION SCHEDULE: The Public Works Department is actively spraying based on mosquito complaint log. ATTACHMENTS: None COMMISSION ACTION:
