HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001 08 27 Informational A Seminole County Transportation Study '" COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM A CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR August 27, 2001 MGR f~EPT J{J Meeting Authorization REQUEST: Fire Department informing the City Commission as to the information requested regarding the Seminole County transportation study. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to present information that was directed by the City Commission during the August 13,2001 City Commission Meeting as it pertains to transportation services for the citizens. CONSIDERATIONS: During the City Commission meeting held on February 26,2001 under Commissioner Martinez report, the Commissioner was interested in alternatives for senior transportation. Further discussion by the City Commission resulted in direction to bring back options for the City Commission to consider. An agenda item was prepared and was presented to the City Commission on August 13,2001 containing multiple options. It was the decision of the Commission to accept alternative number 5 which states "A final alternative could be to wait until Seminole County completes the transportation study and makes recommendations that the City could further evaluate," Further direction by the Commission was to bring back an informational agenda item that would outline if the City of Winter Springs have proper representation in the Seminole County study. The Fire Chief also discussed with the City Commission the possibility to have the Community Development Department accept the responsibility of transportation issues if staff was available with experience in the transportation area. After discussion with the City Manager and the Community Development Director, it was decided that the recently employed Advance Planning Coordinator, Earnest McDonald has experience in transportation planning and will assume the role of representing the City in transportation issues. Furthermore, Seminole County Planning Department and their consultant Glatting, Jackson, Kercher, Anglin, Lopez, & Rinehart, Inc. was made aware of the City's desire to have input in the study to allow proper representation for our citizens in transportation matters. .. August 27,2001 Informational Agenda Item "A" Page 2 RECOMMENDATION: That the City Commission accepts this information and that the Community Development Department will become involved in transportation matters and will report to the City Commission as necessary on transportation issues.
