REQUEST: City Manager requests the Commission to consider scheduling a
workshop to consider new information about respite centers gained from a fact
finding trip to the J.e. Lewis Health Center in Savannah, Georgia.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this agenda item is to have the Commission set a date for a
workshop to discuss the proposed Winter Springs Respite Center as it relates to
information provided in Savannah.
CONSIDERATION:
. On January 2, 2001 preliminary plans were filed with the City for a proposed respite
center in the Winter Springs Industrial Park by HCCH Respite, LLC, Orlando,
Florida.
. On January 16, 2001 the DRC conducted a preliminary meeting to discuss the
preliminary plans for the Respite Center,
. On February 2, 2001 Schenkel Shultz Architects submitted architectural plans to the
Building Division for a courtesy review of the Respite Center.
. On February 20,2001 Commissioners Gennell and Miller along with the Police Chief
and Community Development Director met with staff of the lC. Lewis Health Center
in Savannah.

. To date, the City's actions in this matter have been based upon information provided
by representatives of the proposed respite center. Staff believes that information
learned about the function and operation of the lC.Lewis Health Center should be
considered prior to the City taking further action on the Respite Center application.
FUNDING: No additional funds are required at this time.
RECOMMENDA TION: It is recommended that the City Commission schedule a
workshop to receive information about the operation and function of respite centers.
