Authori tion REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department is notifying the City Commission of the Department's intent to conduct a Family Fitness and Fun Day at Central Winds Park on August 26, 2000 from 11:00am until 2:00pm. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to advise the City Commission of the Department's intent to conduct a Family Fitness and Fun Day at Central Winds Park to kick off the fall program of youth and adult activities. CONSIDERATIONS: . The Parks and Recreation Department's fall youth and adult programs begin on Tuesday, September 5, 2000. . A fun day activity serves to promote the Department's programs and showcase to the community the Police, Fire and Parks and Recreation Departments programs and activities for youth and adults. . The soccer leagues are hosting a jamboree and Little League will have fall registration going on at Central Winds Park during the day on August 26, 2000. 1 FUNDING: All necessary funding for the Fun Day will taken from existing and budgeted promotional line codes. ': .-".i.:ii-....!:;;, ... call407-32i!.4761 lD....ffins l:liooO_aIks Attachment 2 City of Winter Springs Parks and Recreation Department Youth and Adult Programs 10 Week Fall Program Dates: September 5- November 10, 2000 Location: Winter Springs Civic Center ~ Karate 2 days a week (youth class) Thursdays and Fridays 5:30pm- 6:30pm Emphasis is placed on the total development of the student. Increased confidence, strength, coordination, flexibility, self-esteem. Promotes healthy spirit, mind and body. InstfLlctor: Roger George Cost: $70.00/ person ,. Yoga I day a week (adult class) Tuesdays 5:00pm-5:45pm Yoga is a relaxing exercise that enables participants to purely concentrate on the mind, body, and soul. Elissa Maguire, a certified hatha yoga instructor, will teach and explain the benefits of yoga. Cost: $50.00/ person ';; Tai Chi I day a week (adult class) Tuesdays 6:00pm-6:45pm Tai Chi offers a revitalization of the mind and body. This popular exercise strengthens the body, increases longevity, and reduces stress. Tai Chi also increases stamina and improves balance and coordination. Elissa Maguire, a certified instructor, will introduce, teach, and explain to participants the benefits oftai chi. Cost: $50.00/ person ~ Aerobics 3 days a week (adult class) Days and Time to be determined Jazzercise is a heart-pumping, blood-racing, and moderately paced form of exercise. The instructor will encourage participants to exercise properly, increase their heart rate, burn calories, and build muscle. Cost: TBD ~ Gymnastics-Beginners 1 day a week (ages 6 and up) Day and Time to be determined Gymnastics is an exciting form of exercise that incorporates fitness and flexibility. The instructors will teach young children the basics of the gym such as stretching and floor exercises as well as introduce equipment such as the balance beam and trampoline. Cost: TBD Instructors: Orlando Aerials Gymnastics ~ Cheerleading-Beginners I day a week (youth class) Day and Time to be determined Cheerleading is a fun sport that allows children to learn cheers, chants, jumps, and exercises. The instructors will teach young participants the basics of cheerleading. Cost: TBD >- Ballroom Dancing (Classes run AU2ust 6- October 1, 2000) 8 week pro2ram! I day a week (adult class) Sundays 6:30pm-7:30pm Beginners 7:30pm-8:30pm Intermediate Ballroom dancing is an elegant, graceful, and unique form of dance. Dr. Martha Lyle, a professional instructor, will teach adults participants the basic steps and techniques of ballroom dance. Wednesday and Thursday Tennis is a fim sport that requires strength, agility, and hand/eye coordination. Thad Hawkes and staff will teach children between the ages of 6 through 14 the steps and techniques of tennis. Cost: TBD Registration begins immediately for the above classes, please come to Central Winds Park to register for the programs.
