Authorization REQUEST: Mayor John F. Bush is asking the City Commission to review and approve Resolution 2007-48 related to supporting "Pet Rescue By Judy's" Petition for selection by the ABC Network Program "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition". PURPOSE: Resolution 2007-48 which offers support for Pet Rescue by Judy IS being requested to be approved. CONSIDERATIONS: At the September 24, 2007 Regular Meeting of the City Commission, the following discussion took place: PUBLIC INPUT Mr. Bob Rucci, 973 Turkey Hol/ow Circle, Winter Springs, Florida: mentioned an effort to support Pet Rescue by Judy and that a Petition had been started online to have "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition]" agree to build a new Shelter for Pet Rescue by Judy. Mr. Rucci thought this would be a great opportunity for Seminole County and asked for the City's support. Mayor Bush suggested, "I recommend that maybe we do a Resolution in support of this and encourage the other cities and the County to do the same." Mayor Bush then said the Mr. Rucci, "You might want to work with the Clerk on the wording of this Resolution so it hits it on the nose." Mr. Rucci responded by saying, "I will do that or 1 will get her in touch with Madeline Jordan." RECOMMENDA TION: The City Commission is being asked to approve Resolution 2007-48 in support of Pet Rescue by Judy and to request that Mayor Bush send out a letter of support to Seminole County and each of the Seminole County municipalities. WHEREAS, the ABC television network show "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" is seriously considering the selection of "Pet Rescue by Judy's" Petition to construct a new Pet Rescue facility in Seminole County, Florida; and WHEREAS, "Pet Rescue by Judy" was founded in 1992 by Judy Sarullo as a 501 c (3) private, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of cats and dogs in Seminole County; and WHEREAS, the mission of "Pet Rescue by Judy" is to rescue abandoned and distressed animals, to update their vaccines, rehabilitate their health, and to relocate them to good homes; and WHEREAS, "Pet Rescue by Judy" provides a low cost spay and neuter program to help control the population of unwanted animals; and WHEREAS, "Pet Rescue by Judy" successfully rescues, vaccinates, spays, neuters, rehabilitates and locates good homes for more than 2000 animals each year; and WHEREAS, "Pet Rescue by Judy" provides an extensive public education program for the responsible care of animals; and WHEREAS, "Pet Rescue by Judy" has an extensive network of volunteers that provides temporary foster homes for animals until such time that they can be permanently relocated to good homes; and WHEREAS, Seminole County, and the seven municipalities of Seminole County need organizations such as "Pet Rescue by Judy" to perform important humanitarian programs which are not affordable by local governments of Seminole County; and WHEREAS, a suitable site is needed to locate the new facility if constructed by the "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" program. w: ~ ~ ~ ~ ~'.J"di' ~ ~ ~: ~ lL-J NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I. That a copy of this Resolution shall be provided to Seminole County, and the cities of Altamonte Springs, Casselberry, Lake Mary, Longwood, Oviedo, and Sanford requesting their support of "Pet Rescue by Judy's" Petition for selection by the "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" program for construction of a new Pet Rescue facility, and their assistance in identifying a suitable three acre site for the new facility. SECTION II. That a copy of this Resolution shall be provided to the Producers of the ABC television show, "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" at Lock & Key Productions acknowledging Winter Springs and other governmental entities of Seminole County in support of "Pet Rescue by Judy's" Petition for selection. SECTION III. That a copy of this Resolution be provided to Judy Sarullo and "Pet Rescue by Judy" in recognition of Winter Springs' support of this most worthy project. We believe that the enthusiastic support of Seminole County Governments could provide the extra level of support that could make the Network's selection of "Pet Rescue by Judy" a reality. As a result of Pet Rescue by Judy, our family adopted two (2) dogs and we are delighted with these additions to our family, although they can be a handful at times. We fully support Judy Sarullo's efforts and as owner of a local Civil Engineering and Land Surveying company, we would like to offer our professional services at no cost for site planning, surveying, civil engineering and permitting for a new pet rescue facility for Judy Sarullo in Seminole County.
