REQUEST: Police Department requesting the Commission to authorize a
supplemental appropriation of $100,000 to purchase twelve used Ford Crown
Victoria police vehicles from San Antonio Texas.

PURPOSE: To inform and seek the consent of the Commission to purchase twelve
used police vehicles to replace high mileage vehicles exceeding 100,000 miles currently
in the fleet. ." " .
CONSIDERATIONS: In 1999 the Commission approved the current replacement
schedule of vehicles through the purchase of used police vehicles at the San Antonio
auction. The purchase of 1997 Ford Crown Victorias has proven to be a successful
venture. Those vehicles currently are performin~ very well at very minimal cost to the
city.
The Police Department currently has thirteen vehicles in excess of 100,000 miles. The
age of the vehicles that should be replaced range in age from 1989 to 1995. Because of
the combined mileage and age, the condition of the vehicles are rapidly deteriorating
causing the city considerable repair costs. Lo,gisticaJ!y" these older hi,gh mileage vehicles
are no longer dependable.
By purchasing the requested twelve vehicles the Police Department will be able to
deliver quality service to the citizens of Winter Springs at very reasonably expenditure of
funds. Under' the current plan we will be purchasing 1998 Ford Crown Victorias with
approximate!y 60,000 miles on the odometer similar to the quality of the vehicles
p!lfchased in 1999.
FUNDlNG: Funding based upon Commission approval from the General Fund
Reserves.
