REQUEST: The Fire Department requests that the City Commission review the results of the
City of Winter Springs Employee Blood Drive.
PURPOSE: The purpose ofthis item is to update the City Commission on the results of this
activity held on Friday, April 14, 2000, from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm at City Hall.
CONSIDERATIONS:
. The donation of blood helps to assure an adequate and safe supply of blood and blood
products to the community.
. The employees ofthe City of Winter Springs have for 19 years maintained a blood reserve
account with the Central Florida Blood Bank. Last year when the bloodmobile scheduled a
visit to the City, 71 participants registered for the blood drive, and 53 pints of blood was
collected.
. Employees were encouraged to donate blood and were given the opportunity to donate during
their workday.
. The goal for this drive was set for 55 pints of blood.
. The Central Florida Blood and Tissue Bank informs that most donor sites attract
approximately 10 percent of the employees.

RESULTS:
. 53 participants registered for the blood drive, and 46 pints of blood was collected.
. Ofthe 228 current City Employees 23% attempted to donate blood. '
. This has been a successful Blood Drive; however, previous drives have produced more
donors. The rain that we experienced was probably a deterrent as well as the Blood Bank
informs us that donor participation is down. Weare hopeful that next years drive will even be
more successful than this year.
. The most successful blood drive occurred in April 1997 where 62 pints of blood was
collected.

No additional funding was required for this activity.
