'/ Dept. Authorization REQUEST: Commissioner Joanne M. Krebs is requesting that the Mayor and City Commission consider the Florida League of Cities "Cities of Excellence" Award Program for 2007. PURPOSE: The Fourth Annual information packet for the Florida League of Cities "Florida Cities of Excellence Awards" Program has recently been sent to all Member Cities and Commissioner Joanne M. Krebs is asking that this issue be discussed. CONSIDERATIONS: The Florida League of Cities "Florida. Cities of Excellence Awards" Program "is to focus public attention on the countless good things cities do to improve the quality of life in Florida!" Information related to the Florida League of Cities "Cities of Excellence" Award Program has just been sent to its Member Cities requesting nominations in a number of categories as outlined in the attached packet. The deadline for Nominations as stipulated by the Florida League of Cities is August 1 0, 2007. CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA CITY COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING - MAY 29, 2007 REGULAR AGENDA ITEM 604 PAGE20F2 There were several nominations over the past two (2) years for the Florida League of Cities "Florida Cities of Excellence Awards" Program. At the August 8, 2005 City Commission Meeting, Commissioner McGinnis remarked, "On these Nominations, 1 support all of them; and 1 think next year if we could just remember to really get this together several months ahead of time." Mayor Bush commented, "I agree." ATTACHMENT: A. The Florida League of Cities "Florida Cities of Excellence Awards" informational packet. RECOMMENDATION: Commissioner Krebs is asking the Mayor and City Commission to consider recommendations for the fourth annual Florida League of Cities "Florida Cities of Excellence Awards" Program. Winners from the 2004,2005 and 2006 Florida Cities of Excellence Awards pragrama are not eligible to be nominated in the same category they previously' won, but they may be nominated for other categories. 7. The nomination material for the Mayor of the Year, Councllmember of fhe Year, City Employee of the Year, City Manager of the Year, City Clerk of the Year, City Attorney of the Year, Oiy Financ:e Official of the Year, and City Citizen of the Year categories should reflecf the nominees' exemplary efforts and service during the prior year only (not for lifetime achievement). 8. Please submit one original nomination packet and eight copies (including supportive information). Please do not staple nomination pockets or use presentation folders. 9. Narratives should be typed (or printed in block ink) double-spaced on white 8.1/2" x 11" paper. No more than 1,200 words. please include a word count. 10. Supportive material is limited to 10 8-1/2" x 11" pages (single-sided only). 11. The judges reserve the right nof to aWQr-d 0 winner in every category. 12. Finalists will be onnounced in early October 2007, ond the awards will be presented on Friday, November 9, 2007, at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport Hotel during the Awords Banquet. 13. Following the announcement of Finalists in early October, the contact person listed on the Nomination Form will be ask~ to send a color photograph (either hord copy or digital) of the Finalist, along with a 50 word or less summary of the narrative. This information will be used in League publications and during the awards banquet. Each nomination submitted to the league must be voted on by the city council/commission and pass with 0 mojoriiy vote, and be certified by the city clerk (see nomination form). Award nominations ore limited to city, town or village governments that ore members of the Florido league of Cities and their officials, employees and residenm. The Florida League of Cities Executive Committee and past league officers will determine the winners. Judging will be balied entirely on the written entry and supportive information.
