V /Dept. REQUEST: City Manager informing the Commission of operational problems with the solid waste collection encountered during the week of January 3, 2000. PURPOSE: The purpose of this agenda item is to inform the Commission of operational problems with the solid waste collection during the week of January 3, 2000 and the steps to be taken to correct this. OPERA TIONAL PROBLEMS: On January 5, 2000, it was learned that several subdivisions within the Tuscawilla PUD did not have regular solid waste collection. Several calls on January 3 and January 4, 2000 made mention of sloppy operations (i.e. - leaving debris scattered about and tossing the cans/containers about). CORRECTION PROCEDURES: On January 5,2000, the Land Development Coordinator met with representatives of Florida Recycling. It was stated that there has been a substantial turnover of personnel since Florida Recycling took control of the company and that on January 4,2000, nineteen (19) people called in sick. It was stated that the following is now being done or will be done in the very near future: 1) Florida Recycling is presently increasing the work force through aggressive hiring; January 10, 2000 INFORMATION AGENDA ITEM C Page 2 2) Florida Recycling will conduct education classes for all personnel on accepted collection procedures; 3) Florida Recycling will make an attempt to rehire some ofthe experienced personnel that voluntarily left their employment; 4) Florida Recycling has assigned a permanent field supervisor for the City and will make every attempt to ensure that this supervisor is on call, within the City, every day of the week; and, 5) Upper-level management will periodically monitor field operations within the City.
