Authorization REQUEST: Public Works Department Informing the City Commission on Stop Signs at the Winter Springs Boulevard / Northern Way Intersection (west) PURPOSE: The purpose ofthis agenda item is to provide the City Commission information on stop signs at the Winter Springs Boulevard / Northern Way Intersection (west) CONSIDERATIONS: . Winter Springs Boulevard intersects Northern Way at three locations. The western-most location is a 4-way stop controlled intersection (Tuscany's Restaurant is at the northeast comer ofthis intersection). . Stop signs in residential areas are required to be mounted a minimum of7-feet above the ground, in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The stop signs at the Winter Springs Boulevard / Northern Way intersection are mounted approximately 7' -6" above ground level (see photo on next page). Staffs field review verified that the stop signs have good visibility on all four intersection approaches. . According to Police Department records, a total of 59 citations were issued over the past two years at this intersection for running a stop sign. There were four accidents at this intersection over the past two years, with one accident listing "ran stop sign" as an offense. The Police Department indicated there was not a stop sign height or visibility problem at this intersection. . Re-striping of the Winter Springs Boulevard / Northern Way intersection will soon be completed at the conclusion ofthe Winter Springs Boulevard paving project. The re- striping will include re-installation of the 24-inch wide white stop bars at each stop sign. The intersection was previously striped with these white stop bars; however, they were less visible due to fading ofthe striping and deterioration ofthe asphalt. The new stop bars will have improved visibility.
