PURPOSE: The purpose of this Board item is to inform the Commission of Public Works utilization of a product designed for use as flexible sidewalk where trees have consistently buckled the concrete sidewalk. CONSlDERA nONS: The Public Works Department has spent considerable funds in the rehabilitation of the roadway, underdrains and sidewalks on Winter Springs Boulevard. There are portions of sidewalk on Winter Springs Boulevard, as well as other areas in the City, where tree roots create challenges for repairs and replacement because of the nature of the tree growth and the rigidity of concrete. The Public Works Department has researched and found a product utilizing recycled tires that could be a valuable tool in addressing this maintenance issue that we will be trying as a demonstration project. This will occur on Tuesday, October 14th from 1 0:30 to 12:00 near Tuscora Drive and Winter Springs Boulevard. There is approximately 380 lineal feet of sidewalk between Tuscora and the Howell Creek Bridge on the north side of the road where tree roots have heaved up the sidewalk. It is our intent to utilize this product, "Flexi-Pave" in place of concrete. The cost of subcontracted installed concrete sidewalk averages about $16.76 per lineal foot and the cost of the rubber sidewalk is $23 .21 per lineal foot. October 13, 2008 Informational Agenda Item 103 Page 2 FUNDING: The funding for the installation of this product will be a part of the Winter Springs Boulevard reconstruction project line code 115-65000-30020 at a total cost of$8,845.54.
