Authorization REQUEST: Commissioner Rick Brown is requesting that the City Commission review and approve the attached Resolution 2008-49 related to supporting Winter Springs High School's Band of Gold. PURPOSE: Commissioner Brown is asking the City Commission to consider approving Resolution 2008-49 which offers our support for Winter Springs High School's Band of Gold. CONSIDERATIONS: The attached Resolution is being requested by Commissioner Brown. RECOMMENDATION: The City Commission is being asked to approve Resolution 2008-49 in support of Winter Springs High School's Band of Gold. ATTACHMENT: A. City of Winter Springs' Resolution 2008-49. COMMISSION ACTION: RESOLUTION NUMBER 2008-49 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING WINTER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL BAND OF GOLD IN THEIR APPLICATION TO BE CHOSEN TO PERFORM IN THE INAUGURAL PARADE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Winter Springs, Florida recognizes the WINTER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL BAND OF GOLD and the immense opportunity to perform in the Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. and expresses GREAT SUPPORT for these talented students in their application to be chosen to perform. WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold performed at the Lakeside Jazz Festival, Port Orange, Florida, March 2007; Outstanding Section; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold performed at the Liberty Bowl, Memphis, Tennessee, December 2006; Outstanding Drum Major Class AAA Parade; Outstanding Marching Class AAA Parade - 2nd Place; Outstanding Field Show Performance - 2nd Place; Concert Band Participation Award; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold performed at the Chick-Fil- A Bowl, Atlanta, Georgia, December 2004; Concert Band Grand Champion; Field Show Grand Champion; Concert Band Category 3 - 151 Place; 2nd Concert Band - 151 Place; Field Show Category 3 - 151 Place; Parade Category 3 Honorable Mention; Outstanding Band Front - Parade; Outstanding Drum Majors - Field Show; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold achieved the Robert O. Lampi Memorial Award for Superior rating for Concert Band District Level: 2000-2001, 2001- 2002,2002-2003,2003-2004,2004-2005,2005-2006,2006-2007; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold received the Florida Bandmaster's Association Award for Superior rating for Marching Band District Level: 2000- 2001,2001-2002,2002-2003,2003-2004,2005-2006,2006-2007; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold was nominated the Florida Bandmaster's Association Award for Superior rating for Jazz Band District Level: 2002-2003, 2003-2004; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold received the Florida Bandmaster's Association Award for Superior rating for Concert Band State Level: 2004- 2005,2005-2006; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold was awarded the Otto J. Kraushaar Award for Straight Superior ratings for the entire year encompassing Marching Band and District Concert Band and State Concert Band: 2000-2001, 2002-2003, 2003-2004; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold was commended the Sanford Optimist Club/Seminole Herald Participation Award at the Seminole County Band Festival 1997 through 2007; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold performed in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Washington, D.C., March 2001; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold performed in the Winter Springs Holiday Parade, Winter Springs, Florida, Lead Off Participant, November 1999 through 2007; and WHEREAS, the Winter Springs High School Band of Gold also performed for the Winter Springs High School Homecoming Parade, Winter Springs, Florida, Lead Off Participant, October 1997 through 2007; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Winter Springs City Commission, that we support the WINTER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL BAND OF GOLD in their application to be chosen to perform in the Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C.
