Authorization REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department is requesting the City Commissions approval to change the part-time Therapy Pool Specialist position to a full- time position and to hire Liz Abitante for this position. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to approve a change from part-time to full-time for the Therapy Pool Specialist position and hire Liz Abitante for this position. CONSIDERATIONS: • Due to the popularity of the new Senior Center Therapy Pool, there are currently 325 members after only 5 months of operation and membership continues to grow. We only anticipated 100-150 users. The amount of work to be done to schedule, promote, staff, check, and clean the Therapy Pool has more than doubled. The need and demand is there now for afull-time staff member. • Liz Abitante, the part-time Therapy Pool Specialist is currently working over 30 hours per week. She is very organized, thorough and detailed. Liz is liked and respected by the entire staff and most importantly by the senior public she serves. • The full-time Therapy Pool Specialist job description has been approved by Cody and Associates. Liz Abitante's credentials and experience exceed the requirements of the position. She has the experience, ability, and drive to meet the current and future needs of the Senior Center Therapy Pool and do an excellent job. Agenda Item Consent 200 May 27, 2008 Page 2 • There is sufficient funding available in the Parks budget salary account from the unfilled part-time Office Assistant position to fund this request now. • There is additional funding from the Senior Center revenue account that can be utilized to continue to fund this request next FY 08/09. RECOMMENDATIONS: The Parks and Recreation Department is recommending that the City Commission approve the change of the part-time Therapy Pool Specialist position to a full-time position and hire Liz Abitante for this position. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Coordinate and plan specialized therapy pool programming. 2. Maintain accurate user and attendance records. 3. Collect and receipt therapy pool fees. 4. Develop and carry out therapy pool schedules and registrations. 5. Teach aquatic exercise classes. 6. Train and develop parks and recreation staff and interested volunteers to effectively instruct aquatic exercise classes. 7. Coordinate class cancellation notifaction to pool users. 8. Research needs, plan and order pool chemicals, equipment, and supplies for the Therapy Pool. 9. Perform and train other parks and recreation staff to check water chemistry, log results, correct system problems and add chemicals as needed. 10. Perform Pool and Locker Room/Restroom Maintenance and train other Parks and Recreation staff to assist. 11. Collect water samples and forward for testing as needed. 12. Perform and train other parks and recreation staff in procedures to maintain water temperature, healthy and safe conditions at an acceptable level 13. Create and proof all correspondences, press releases, flyers and mailing for the Therapy Pool. 14. Assist with Senior Center programs, classes, and events. 15. Organize an annual Senior Health Fair. 16. Report and be responsible to the Senior Manager on a daily basis. 17. Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Ability to deal with a variety of senior's with varying physical and mental ability. • Knowledge of the professional principles, methods and procedures of public recreation services and administration. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of one-year experience instructing individuals (seniors) with all types of disabilities in swim or various types of exercise programs. Education/Experience can be substituted on a year for year basis. (A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)
