I Dept. 7/ "-I Authorization REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department and Community Development Department wish to inform the City Commission about the Leadership Seminole Class 16 Campaign for Boys Town Central Florida - Buy a Brick, Build a Walk of Hope. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission about the Leadership Seminole Class 16 campaign for Boys Town Central Florida - Buy a Brick, Build a Walk of Hope. CONSIDERATIONS: . For more than 90 years, Boys Town has served as a beacon of hope for America's - children and families. It is a not-for-profit, non-denominational organization that provides runaway, homeless, court placed or abused girls and boys - newborns through 18-year-olds - a safe, caring and loving place to live. Boys Town teaches these children skills and healthy relationship-building, supports their moral and spiritual growth, and promotes self-government in a family style environment. . The Central Florida Demetree Campus in Oviedo is the second oldest and largest Boys Town location in the country outside of headquarters in Nebraska. In 2006, Boys Town Central Florida celebrated 20 years of devoted service to at-risk children and their families. The wear-and-tear of its facilities had long begun to show, even as it continued to serve 1,224 children and 138 families that same year with emergency shelter care, long term residential care, common sense parenting course, specialized treatment group homes, all-inclusive behavioral intervention and assessment services, and in-home family servIces. . Boys Town has since commissioned a comprehensive ten-year master plan of its Demetree campus, to ensure another 20 years of healing and hope for our most vulnerable citizens and to consolidate other area shelters on one site. The expansion and rehabilitation effort that is now underway has several residential homes completely renovated, and a new boys' shelter under construction. . My Leadership Seminole classmates and I have committed to extensively renovation and refurbishing the last remaining residential homes on campus. Estimated costs are between $60,000 to $70,000, plus ample "sweat" and countless volunteer hours to put in new floors, new paint, new kitchen cabinets, new plumbing, etc. Agenda Item Informational 101 April 14, 2008 Page 2 . Your purchase of a brick or two for our planned Walk of Hope would not only allow our class to deliver on its commitment, it would forever impress your name and/or words of encouragement to resident Boys Town children and families for years to come. Ultimately, you would help to guarantee Boys Town Central Florida's continued role as a warm, nurturing and functioning "shelter from the storm" for another 14,100 children over the next two decades. . With a very short window to complete this endeavor, I trust you will respond swiftly and generously. Details of our dedication ceremony will follow. .
