HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999 12 06 Special 2 A TTACHMENT "Au ~, A RESPONSE TO NON -CONFORMISTS The elections as we know are over. However, the disgruntled group that ran a low level campaign as presented through half truths and innuendoes in their campaign literature seem to ignore the fact that the people have cast their ballots and the tallies are in, We are now receiving letters at the commission, as we had been throughout the past two years, again full of insults, innuendoes and half truths. They are on the same track as others were in '97 except that instead of a vehicle they are using verbal assaults. When a disgruntled group has to resort to recruiting people who have never cared whether our City progressed or remained stagnant, in order to upset and delay the forward movement and the balanced working of our progressive commission, we have a serious problem. This group works in sync and while one segment attacks the commission with the garbage mentioned earlier, the others resort to the newspapers in order to keep the ugly bombardment coming. The democratic process is alive and well in Winter Springs. There isn't an individual nor an organization, nor an organized group of citizens that can lay claim to the fact that they have been muzzled at City Hall and not permitted to speak for or against any issue. However, this is a legislative forum and there are rules by which order and a sense of discipline are maintained. When public input is closed, whether at the start of the meeting or after a public hearing item is brought up, it is over and I do not know of any similar body violating their own rules to allow disruptive behavior from the public to take over. If an individual, be it whomever he/she may be, is dissatisfied with the proceedings, there are alternatives within procedural rules. However, if one chooses to sit back and cackle, make lewd and indecent gestures with your hands, mock and make cat calls at the commission, get up out of your seat and gesture at the commission, well sir/lady; you are a disruptive person and should accept the consequences of your actions, In a dictatorship your position; right or wrong is the correct one regardless. But, this is not a dictatorship and in spite of the overwrought sentiments expressed in the missiles directed at us, couth, serenity and good conduct shall prevail at our commission meetings. I publicly stated before that I was not elected to be the target for personal insults. I will accept criticism surrounding my performance as a Commissioner. I will respond to vile, vicious and personal attacks in kind. I took an oath of office and I have honestly and diligently discharged my duties in fairness to all the citizens of Winter Springs and will continue to do so until a majority of our citizens decide they are not in favor of good government. Commissioner Edward Martinez Jr.
