REQUEST: Public Works Department providing the City Commission information and
requesting City Commission input regarding the proposed pedestrian bridge
over Howell Creek at Northern Way
PURPOSE: The purpose of this agenda item is to provide information and request the
Commission's input regarding the proposed pedestrian bridge over Howell Creek
at Northern Way being installed as a part of the Northern Way /Shetland Avenue
Sidewalk Project.
CONSIDERATIONS:
• At the November 26, 2007 City Commission meeting, the Commission directed staff to
proceed with sidewalks on the south side of Northern Way from Howell Creek Drive to
Shetland Avenue, and on the west side of Shetland Avenue from Northern Way to Citrus
Road.
• The sidewalk project includes County funding for a new pedestrian bridge on Northern
Way over Howell Creek. The pedestrian bridge will have a span of 80-feet and will be
detached from the existing vehicular bridge (see Exhibit A for the preliminary design
drawing).
• The overall bridge style will be a prefabricated pedestrian truss bridge, similar to many
other pedestrian bridges installed in Seminole County. This type of bridge is attractive,
durable, and cost effective. Within the general category of pedestrian truss bridges, many
options are available. The primary design decisions consist of selecting the truss style,
truss finish, and decking material. The following sections provide stars recommendation
for each of these design decisions and a brief summary of other available options.
