Authorization REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department wishes to inform the City Commission regarding the July 4`h Celebration of Freedom / 50`'' Anniversary. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission regarding current planning discussions for July 4`i' Celebration of Freedom / 50`h Anniversary. CONSIDERATIONS: As part of the City Commission Meeting held on February 9, 2009, the City Commission approved Agenda Item #603, for Staff to raise a minimum of $10,000 towards a budged event of $61,000 for the City's upcoming 4`h of July Celebration of Freedom / 50`" Anniversary. Since Approval, City Staff has been successfully raising funds and creating ways to generate revenues to offset the Event's cost. At this time, Event Expenses are $57,713.00 and funds that have been raised are $23,250.00. City Staff are continuing their fundraising efforts with adding General and Food Vendors as well as offering various sponsorship and participating opportunities. • Event T-Shirts will be available for the public to purchase. Staff will be required to wear the shirts for recognition purposes. The cost for staff shirts is included in the aforementioned Event Expenses. • Upcoming Auditions for the Star Spangled Showcase are scheduled to take place at the Civic Center on Saturday, June 13`h and Saturday, June 20~' from 10 am to Noon. At this time, we have a great amount of interest from Winter Springs residents whom have committed to the Auditioning dates with the intention of showcasing their singing talents. Currently, Commissioner Joanne Krebs and Mark Fisher of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra have committed to become Judges for the upcoming Showcase. Agenda Item Informational 101 June 8, 2009 Page 2 FUNDING: City funding up to $51,000 will be reduced by sponsors, vendors, donations and staff cost reductions, etc. over $10,000. As previously mentioned, fundraising efforts have produced $23,250 to date and City Staff will continue those fundraising efforts in an attempt to cover all costs. RECOMMENDATIONS: Parks and Recreation recommends that the City Commission review the information presented and provide further direction as needed.
