A= t orization REQUEST: City Manager requesting the Commission to review the draft "Did You Know" information and provide input and direction as deemed appropriate. PURPOSE: This agenda item is needed for the Commission to review the draft "Did You Know" information and provide input and direction as deemed appropriate. CONSIDERATIONS: On January 26, 2009, the Commission directed the City Manager to compile "Did You Know" information about the City that would be useful, helpful and/or interesting to our citizens. Accordingly, staff has compiled the attached information for Commission review. Please note that this information may be categorized in two groups: 1. City and Other Governmental Services. For example: Did you know...That you can listen in live to Commission meetings online? Previous meetings are also available in the archive section. To listen in, visit our website and click on Mayor & Commission, City Commission Meeting Audio. Did you know...That there is a Division of Motor Vehicles office here in the City of Winter Springs? The Division of Motor Vehicles is a State of Florida Agency, not a City Agency. The State of Florida has a branch located at 290 East State Road 434 in Winter Springs and their telephone number is (407) 327-4760. 2. Interesting Facts. For example: Did you know...That the average household in Winter Springs generated 1.54 tons or 3.2 pounds per person per day of solid waste in 2008? Each week, the contracted solid waste collector picks up, at the curb, household garbage twice and yard waste once at a cost of just over $1.50 per pickup. Did you know...That Winter Springs residential water customers pay just one penny for 6.5 gallons of treated water delivered right to their home? The city charges in-city residential customers $1.11 per thousand gallons for the first 10,000 gallons of house hold usage. The rate increases to $1.53 per thousand gallons for the next 5,000 gallons and continues to increase as rates increase, but that's still quite a bargain. Even though it's inexpensive, please remember to conserve our natural resources and use water wisely! Arguably, both categories of information are useful and applicable to a "did you know-type" document. Accordingly, information of each type has been included in the attached document for the Commissions' review. Once this review is complete, we have several options for disseminating the "Did You Know" information including: • Brochure/Flyer (for handout, placement at customer service counters, inclusion in newsletter, etc.) • Website • Include in the information that is scrolled on the Projection Screen before Commission meetings. FUNDING: To be determined based upon communication method(s) desired (printed flyer for distribution, website, etc.). RECOMMENDATION: The City Manager recommends that the City Commission review the draft "Did You Know" information and provide input and direction as deemed appropriate. That recyclable items include pasteboard (i.e. cereal and pizza boxes), corrugated cardboard, newspapers, magazines, plastics #1-#7 (no lids please), aluminum cans, steel and tin cans, and telephone books? Not accepted are plastic grocery bags, oil or pesticide containers, light bulbs, aluminum foil or pie plates, paint cans, electronic devices, egg cartons and Styrofoam trays. That Winter Springs had four active bald eagle nests within the City limits in 2008? Visitors to Central Winds Park frequently see the eagles on the ball field lights and fencing. That Lake Jesup is over 16,000 acres (including flood plains) and has an estimated alligator population of over 10,000 making it the densest concentration of alligators in the world? That the City owns and operates two wastewater treatment plants and three water treatment plants? The Class 7 rating provides a 15% rate reduction on flood insurance policies issued for properties located within the 100-year floodplain. Building renovations were done in 2006-2007 with the addition of a 40x40 foot heated Therapy Pool. Membership has increased from about 492 members in 2004 to 1,318 in 2008. That the Winter Springs Therapy Pool accommodates 30 people at a time and it is staffed by a licensed and certified Lifeguard, CPR/AED/First Aid and Oxygen Instructor, Swim Instructor, and Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program Instructor? "Movie Nights" is a free service offered by the Winter Springs Police Department that affords a selected community the opportunity to come together in a street gathering type format to watch kid-friendly movies, enjoy free popcorn, etc. Funding for Movie Nights is provided via through various grants. This program is designed for the elderly or those who have special needs and desire to be contacted daily (at a time of their choosing) to ensure their safety and/orwell-being.
